augsburger, Parking machines in the UK all use 10p and 5p coins and will all need to be modified.
According to the treasury notification link posted by kena (thanks for that) it will only cost a mere £124m to vending machine owners to modify them all, but will save the government quite a bit on raw materials. No sign of them subsidising the work though; not surprised.
Was totally unaware of the copper plated steel bronze 1p and 2p coins in 1998 kena; just tested a couple.

Actually Mike, both coins will circulate, I would have thought, so it'd just be a case of getting the right coins in your change for the machines. Unless they have plans to take out the perfectly good coins so soon.

augsburger, I would have thought that they would have had to adapt the machines to take both types if both are to be in circulation, or there are going to be a lot of long queues at the machines and an awful lot of swearing!
They managed to adapt all the machines when we became decimalised in the 70's so I don't think it would be that difficult to just add a couple of authorised coins.

These should be known as chav coins, seeing as they are 11% thicker!

The change does not really bother me. The only time I have 10 or 5 pence coins are when I get some in change or get some from the bank to find new releases. When finished the 1 pence, 2 pence, 5 pence, and 10 pence go into a jar which when full, I dump in the coin sorter at the bank since there is no charge for using it.
Keep a few 10 pence plus 20 and 50 pence coins aside the rare times I need to pay for parking.

A friend got a 2012 5p in his change 2 days ago (southern Scotland). I'm going to start looking for non-magnetic 2012+ 5p and 10p coins.

I just discovered that KM show the 2011 10p and 5p as Nickel Plated Steel, too. I mentioned it this afternoon and someone showed me a 2011 10p coin and it is magnetic.

Ive been getting a lot of this stuff. A lot of 2012s and 2011s which are magnetic. Are any minted which arent magnetics?

All of the 2011 and 2012 5 pence and 10 pence coins have a steel core. Also starting this month, The Royal Mint has starting taking cupronickel five pence and ten pence coins from circulation. Ken

As if we needed another reason to hate the 5p coin, pretty soon all of the ones in circulation will be made of steel.

Well, I like the 5p coin, and if the Government abolishes it, they'll abolish the 1p and 2p as well and we'll have rampant price inflation back again.

The government is unlikely to abolish the 5p coin. The 1p or 2p coins would have to go first.

The UK should get rid of the 1 pence and 2 pence coin but I don't see that happening soon since they only redesigned the coin series back in 2008 for the Royal Shield reverse design. Elimination of the 1 pence and 2 pence would mean that the 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, and 50 pence would all need a design change for the reverse.
I don't think that the elimination of the 1 pence and 2 pence would anywhere the impact on inflation unlike quantitative easing programs done by the Bank of England.

Since 1p,2p,5p & 10p are now mostly composed of steel , I am beginning to think a simlar fate might fall on the 20p and one day they might withdraw the old cupronickel ones as well.
Prices are rising as usual and come to think of it there isn't much you can buy with 20p these days (even at Tesco superstores), I could only come up with less a dozen things - sooner or later I think the 20p will have its composition changed as well .....
