I agree, very nice - is he holding something to his chest?

That's a nice coin.

I've been contemplating getting one of this reverse type. This one has a great obverse too.

One thing I like about these reverses is the bit of three dimensionality that was used in the design. Some are better attempts than others, yours is very nice.

Wow, sharp coin! I've noticed the style of busts on London coins are rather distinctive from continental mints--or am I seeing things?

Nice pickup jw. Is he wearing a radiate crown? Kind of looks like it.

Nice one JW! I have the same one in my collection.

I love this type as it is only one of a handful that have radiate busts. Terrible lighting when I took this picture, but here it is anyways.

Cheers,

-Kurt

Hey Kurt, I think yours may be somewhat different if my eyes are not deceiving me. Does the globe on yours have vertical and horizontal lines? If so, it is believed they represent longitude and latitude and is a different RIC reference. Mine does not seem to have the lines.

As far as him holding something, I don't think so. At least I can't tell if he is.

I do think the bust types from Britain are much different than the continental minted coins which makes it interesting for us collectors.

During the break-away Britannic Empire London developed a very different style to the rest of the Roman mints. Most mints can be identified by the bust alone but under Carausius and Allectus the British coins became very stylistic with long necks and small heads etc.

After Constantius invaded the pronounced style began to slowly disappear but hints of it remained for a number of years. Both these coins were minted less the 30 years after the invasion and will have hints of that history in them.

Both very nice.

JW, I think you are correct. My eyesight is very poor (not good for a collector of ancients).

EDIT: I just looked at my gallery and I have the reference marked as RIC VII 216, apparently I can't even read my own typing

RIC 216 can't be correct. It has P -A across fields

JW,

Wow, I am so glad you posted your coin. It may be time for me to go back over many of my early purchases and recheck the attributions!

216? Hard to imagine how I even come up with that one.

I'm still going through my collection double checking my early attributions. Especially the Constantine era coins. I wonder how I ever came up with the attributions I did, but, I did and now I must go back and fix them. Have you checked for the correct attribution yet? If not, I would be glad to help you look. Your coin is very nice. Well centered and struck. Great detail.

Nice London coins. I don't own any London coins just yet, but perhaps in the future.

Thank you JW.

Yes, I rechecked it and I believe it is RIC VII 236
