I agree with trout, acetone will take most things off. It looks like a Wide AM but better and closer pic would help.

Correct me if I'm wrong here guys, but the Acetone he would want to use is Industrial Acetone not a Nail Polish Remover.....If I remember from some previous posts Nail Polish removers even though some claim 100% pure Acetone....are not. Or they tend to have Fragrances and other trace chemicals they tend not to mention on the bottle.

I've been meaning to check up on this, after another thread regarding Acetone a month or so back. I did whine up picking up a can off Amazon. Here's a description of the can,
(1qt Blue Can w/ silver top & white cap)On it reads:
Klean Strip
ACETONE
Special-purpose thinner, cleaner and remover.
Evaporates quickly
I'm sure you've seen it in your local Walmart or Big Box Store Which I come to find out.
I was kinda bummed being I spent $10 on the Acetone off Amazon and didn't realize they charged me $7 to ship it. They never mentioned the $7 shipping! LOL
Is this an OK product to use?
As always thanks for all the help.

And just like everyones been saying, If you take a better pic it would be alot easier to spot. Good Luck hope it turns out to be one.

Yeah if you are going to use acetone get the 100% stuff. Home depot or any hardware store has it.

Just to clarify...I am a girl...but it's an easy mistake.

Here are some more pictures. I'm sorry it's hard to get good light because my camera automatically makes the photo darker because of the shine on the pennies or how close I am.

It's not really worth the effort, it's a very common coin. If you're determined, simply take it over to the sink and hold it under HOT water. Rub it with your fingers only and see if it comes off when hot.

While Thad is right about the commonality of the coin, it would make a good practice coin. I believe acetone would do the trick as that looks like caked on glue. A good over nite soak could do the trick.

And not sure how anyone got guy out of Athena.

No worries, amassey08873 :)

BadThad- I don't care if it's a "common" coin. It's 40 years older than me and it has survived so much! I mean, that coin made it through a world war, natural disasters, man-made disasters, spandex and acid wash jeans...

I can't just throw it away, it's history!

Thank you amida17.

Tomorrow is my day off from work so I'll go to Home Depot and look for the Acetone since that seems to be almost unanimously suggested.

Can't wait to see my "NEW" 1942 penny :)

To go out and purchase Acetone for about $5 to possibly clean a $0.05 coin makes little CENTS. I go along with Thad and just try some soap and water. Nothing to loose on a coin that bad and that common a date. If you go to almost any coins store, coin show or even in change you may well find one with that date in much better condition for what you would have paid for the Acetone. And remember that Acetone is sort of dangerous to have around if not needed.
