I was not able to make out a campgate, but if you are able to see one than it could be Theodosius I, Arcadius, ect..

Can coins of Theo I and Arcadius have simpler-style busts like this one?

At this late stage of the empire and especially on these small AE4 coins the portaits tend to look the same.

Any chance it could be Valentinian III? There are campgates listed for him in Helveticas.

Not sure if it helps , but I think there may be 5-6 layers on the campgate.

I certainly can't tell since the image is pretty dark. The coin is about as clean as it's going to get, I think. Nice obverse details.

I lightened your image a bit to see if it would reveal any more of the reverse. I still can't make it out. I will go as far as saying that it could be Valentinian II, but Valentinian III bust a more crude than the earlier emperor's so I don't think it would be him.

It's easier to see in hand, but here is what I am talking about:
It's-A-Long-Shot,-But-Maybe....

The orange "L" follows the side and bottom of the campgate, and the two arrows indicate where there are layers.

With regards to the bust, now that I've taken a better look at it, kind of reminds me of Honorius, I think.

If there was only one more letter after the DN in the legend than we would have a better chance to determine who it is.

I see what you're point out--my bet is on a campgate too.

I know... I've tried fitting emperors' names to what little remains of the legend but haven't gotten anything definitive.

At least there are some possibilities that you narrowed it down to. I think it can only possibly be a few emperors and it's definitely a late Roman.

Yeah, I'm thinking Honorius, Arcadius. Maybe Theo I. If it was a little cruder like echizento said, I'd consider Val III also.

Interesting read - I still dont know enough about these later Emperors. I agree I see what could be large campgate bricks on the reverse.
