I'd offer the seller a reduced price and take them both.

I have to agree with everyone else. I see no difference. In fact, I would say they are the same coin, just one has been cleaned. I think the first has silvering and in the second image the silvering has been removed. Even the flan shape is the same. And, I too prefer the second over the first. That's my 2 cents worth anyhow.

Very good! They are the same coin before and after cleaning. The white stuff was not silver but light colored encrustations. The second is perhaps a little lower grade but the remaining detail is easier to see so I prefer it.

Yes, much more than die match because the flan and striking weaknesses match as well. If these were not the same coin it would be certain evidence that the coins were cast fakes. Hand struck ancient coins can match in terms of die but not often do you see a pair that are off center in the same exact way and have flaws that match exactly. That level of match requires being cast from a master coin and the Romans did not do that.

All jokes aside, I had a feeling they were both the same coin. Although, I'm wondering if it's best to leave it as it was with the silver or clean it more. To my mind, it seems like it would be best to give it minimal cleaning and leave the silver on it, if possible.

I have seen a few sellers on ebay that were using the same photo for another coin more than a few times. I thought that they were either using the same photo, or it was a fake. It seems like it's hard to tell if there are cast bubbles.

Gil-galad: Although most of us thought it was silvering, Doug pointed out that it was "white stuff" on the surface. I'm not sure how I would feel about removing a very thin patchy silvering. I still think the coin looks better once cleaned.

Right, I misread that. Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah, since it's not silver then yes, cleaning sound appropriate.

Yeah., when I first saw it, I noticed how remarkably similar the details looked. I just figured that maybe by chance these two were produced back to back with the same does. Kind of out there I know, but who would have known right?

I really should have caught that...I was not expecting it.

Could you tell us a little about the process that you used to clean this coin?

I like the coin better after the cleaning and it is also a good example of buying a better quality coin from the start.

Yes but I'm working on a new (to me) method so I'll postpone this for a bit in the hope of figuring out how to do it better before going public with the experiment. I ordered some uncleaned coins and will be trying them when they arrive. The question is whether I'm ruining coins or improving them.

Glad I got in on the tail end of this post, I too think the second coin (or the first cleaned) looks better. Nice detail.
