Oh wow! Now that's a nice Gryphon JW. Both sides look great. Puts my poor Gryphon to shame!

Which is the rarest/scarcest animal of the zoo series?

Might as well share my last Gallienus zoo with you guys and feel free to do the same.
Besides the Gryphon and Centaur which I really like is the Pegasus reverse. I actually have two of them, but this one is the best out of the two.
I'll be on the hunt for a panther and a lion as well! Thanks for all the comments and great Gallienus coins you all have shared as well. Regards

Great question ValiantKnight. I'd like to know myself. Gallienus had a bunch of different reverses of animals but have no idea which one is the king of the zoo. I'm sure someone would know here on the forum though.

There are some sites that specialize in the collection of the "Gallienus Zoo Series", but I'm not sure they answer your question of which animal/mythical creature is rarest. Interesting nonetheless.

The Boar and the Lion are two that you don' see much.

I like your Hippocamp. Very sharp. I have one, but not in as good shape as yours. My second best is a Pegasus.

Getting some great Gallienus reverses guys! I have been looking for the Hippocamp as well Doucet. That one is one of the best I've seen. Your Pegasus is also very nice indeed JW. Especially the patina on it. I would agree that the Lion is rarely seen as well as the Boar. Although I saw a nice Boar on ebay not too long ago. Good thread here I think. Makes me want to find some more zoo series for my collection! Thanks.

Good website on the zoo series JW! At least in that percentage column, it would look like the Boar and Lion, which represents Hercules, are the rarest. Also, Siscilian minted coins seem less common than the Rome minted coins. Very interesting!

Very nice coins!

Your tetradrachm and one that JW posted a while ago promted me to pull the trigger on getting an Aurelian for myself. And now I am on the lookout for some animal / mythical creature reverses!

Did some checking on ebay as a quick indicator of the lion and boar reverses of Gallienus. None! I'm sure if I checked Vcoins I could come up with some (and will). But almost any other reverse was available in some degree of detail. On the hunt! Regards to all.

Just bought this one off a fellow member here. Not exactly a perfect example but hey, at least for you guys, it makes your already nice zoo animal coins look 500 times prettier in comparison. And the price was not bad at all, especially since it looks like it can be attributed. It's of an antelope.

ValiantKnight, your first 'zoo' series Gallienus is probably better than the mine, which I thought I'd share with you. I haven't found a Gryphon that is walking right yet. Might not look like much, but it was my first!
Once I started researching his coins I got hooked on them!

Just rotate the coin 180°.

Too easy biggfredd! I have to do it the hard way! Just kidding. Actually I did that and it seemed to work fine. I just haven't posted the pictures yet. Thanks for the help though. I can use all I can get!
