nickelsearcher: Good decision! No sense in settling!
I've toyed with the idea of putting together a nice XF-45 commem set to go along with my MS-65 and above set. What what you say is the availability of coins in the higher circulated grades? Any "can't find it" coins in XF-45?

Is it against your rule to take something as a pocket piece to wear it down?
I would understand if it was, I think I would have a similar rule.

The problem with wearing a coin down as a pocket piece is it will retain that bright shinny look for decades making it looked cleaned.

To your question ... the best I can answer is my personal experience chasing these circulated coins for over two years now ... and the current PCGS Pop Report of this set in circulated grade ... There are two that have never received a PCGS grade below AU ... Spanish Trail and Arkansas-Robinson. Hence my interest in this well worn but alas damaged Spanish Trail. There are several in this series with only 1 total PCGS example graded below AU ... these include Cincinnati, Elgin, Lynchburg and York. It's entirely possible that I may never complete my quest for the circulated set ... but such is the joy of the hunt and the reason I enjoy the chase. Pleased that I passed on this damaged example ... and Thanks to all my commemorative friends for your valued input.  The hunt continues .... David Edited for spllneging Edited by nickelsearcher

Funny Story.... I am fairly new here... I was the guy that sold this coin on ebay... I was a new member here at the time looking to expand my circulated sets and this coin never had appealed to me.. I had no idea anyone here would be talking about my coin :). Pretty simply this was one I'd inherited. The story was the guy that bought it from the mint lost it to my dad. My dad would have been 85 in a month or so and the fellow he won it off of would have been about 115. The way I always heard the story was it was a pretty interesting night.... now my dad could shoot and so could this fellow... AND they both loved to fish... well here on the lower Texas coast you can kinda do both... Anyway over a few whiskeys their buddys threw some bottles out in the surf on an out going tide and my dad and the fellow in question both whipped out their 22's. They let them get out to about 40 yards... Dad beat him 8 in 15 seconds vs 6 in 15 seconds. Well, they both put up something special and dad won that coin. It was beat up but it was that old fellow's good luck charm... Well dad never believed in luck (other than the kind you make yourself) but he always broght out that coin for any reason he could rub it in on his fishing buddy. Some of the marks were from taking reels apart (using it as a screwdriver hahaha!)... The rest of the rim damage I have no Idea. But my dad had GREAT usage over it. Anyway, long story short... it was real.. Funny I don't have the coin anymore but I have both 22's used in the "duel" cause I "like" them. Think its kinda cool y'all were talking about my coin. Yeppers... Penn Peerless's was what my dad (and all the surf fishermen) used at the time... The screw on the end is just wide enough(with a little force helping - I have a few reels I was left and can see it happening under a few whiskeys).. No telling with those guys what else it could have been used for... I guess its no different today... I routinely use quarters for shotgun choke tube wrenches and dimes for my fishing reel. I guess if I messed up and used a wisconsin error quarter for the shotgun choke or a W mint dime for a reel I'd be just as guilty..
Another interesting caveat is that some of the reels I have are in better MUCH better shape than the coin. Guess you have to have your priorities...
