First off, this is very educational. I learned something today. Secondly, from the auction text: "We do not have a gram scale, but the weight of the coin is very light & also very thin compared to a normal 2003 Lincoln Cent (as shown in our picture below)." I find it hard to believe that a coin dealer doesn't have a scale. I'm an amateur, and I have a scale.

Follow up question: Should someone report this to ebay since it is an obvious fake?

Not private feedback but rather private bidding and private items sold.

Sent this to the seller on Thursday... Quote:Dear tlc-varieties, https://goccf.com/t/114547Pay particular attention to Mike Diamond's post. He is one of the premier error guys in the world. You can Google him if you don't know who he is. Apparently he doesn't care that he's going to shaft someone.

He never actually calls it a doubled die. Rather the seller states that it looks like a doubled die. Did you happen to hear back from him?

The seller pulled the item and left a note at the bottom of the page that the coin wasn't an error. I'm sure he looked at this topic and pulled it because our discussion.
I didn't pull my bid because I jumped the gun. I didn't read all of the description and look at all of the photos as I should have. His description didn't cause me to bid. I just need to slow down. I saw, bid and then really looked at what the coin was. I did something I know not to do. I should have done at least the basic research on the coin. That was my bad, not the sellers.
I give the seller points for his retraction and explanation and as always I thank CCF members for all the post.

Quote:On Mar-24-12 at 19:12:56 PDT, seller added the following information: Dear fellow eBayer's, Please be advised that we have received information from several trusted sources that this coin is truly a man-made error, rendering it vertually worthless as a mint error. All bidders will be notified that we will be ending this auction Sunday, 3/25. We will be contacting ebay as to the correct procedure. Thanks to all that have shown concern. We apologize to our bidders as we never intended to mislead anyone. TLC Varieties On Mar-25-12 at 06:29:05 PDT, seller added the following information: Dear fellow eBayer's, First of all, I want to thank everyone who has bid on this coin. It has come to my attention that this coin is "NOT" a mint error. Several well known authorities on error coins have judged the doubling on this coin to be man-made with soft dies. We appreciate & thank them for their valuable input. With this information in hand, I have decided to cancel all bids & end the ad. We have been on ebay for over 7 years now & take pride in showcasing our coins in our store & will not allow this or any other coin to blacken our eye. Take care & happy eBaying, Joe @ TLC Varieties While I don't like the private listings, he does have 100% feedback on 2000+ transactions. Perhaps he did make an honest error. That being said, what do you think of all these other doubled dies that "tlcvarieties" has on ebay? http://www.ebay.com/sch/tlc-varieti...trksid=p3692

Quote:Perhaps he did make an honest error.[/quote I have a hard time believing that. The seller went out of his way not to call it a doubled die, instead calling it doubling or stating that it looks like a doubled die. Further, the title states "Doubled Die Obverse?", as in, don't complain after you purchase this because you're authenticating this, not me. Also, if you look at his other listings, he is clearly a sophisticated dealer of coins. The pics are great, annotated with arrows, and he seems knowledgeable. Yet, this coin dealer doesn't own a pocket scale? That being said, he did the right thing, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. [quote]That being said, what do you think of all these other doubled dies that "tlcvarieties" has on ebay? I'm a newbie, but from a cursory review of his other listings, his stuff looks good. With the exception, of course, of the novelty items such as the million dollar bills or two serial number $2 bills.

Bob Piazza and Jason Cuvelier contacted the seller with Mike's opinion on Saturday night and he agreed to pull the auction.Have to give him credit for that as he really didn't call it anything in particular.

That is great to hear the seller pulled the auction. Not many sellers or even collectors really understand what doubled dies are, so it is easy to make a mistake like that. Extra kudos goes to the original person for pointing it out and asking about it.
