Wow jwharper, I really like your choice of coin ... and knowing me, I would already have purchased the one that you're considering ... but after gazing-through the coins from Doucet's link, I must agree with DVC and Doucet => there are a few far nicer examples up for grabs from those other dealers ... ... man, it's a bit like a recovering drunk wandering into his favorite bar and then merely "watching" all of his ol' buddies enjoying their beers! (NOTE => but I still haven't bought a coin since I purchased good ol' Claudius) ... but again, I think those coins are very cool!

Thanks for the help and information. What with all the postings of Greek coins, I have an itch to own one. But I will bide my time until I find the right one and not jump in without consulting you guys.
Regards,

What was the meaning/symbolism of that checkered design on the reverse?

Quote: if you search a bit you will find a nice one with good detail for a nice price. 75-100 even less if your patient. For example, I bought this one off Denant for $36. Quote: What was the meaning/symbolism of that checkered design on the reverse? I haven't found an explanation, but perhaps it's simply a design to accomodate the various minting symbols? Here's an interesting page on these coins.

OK, I didn't buy this coin, but I did buy this other from a trusted seller at a good price if the information you guys gave applies to it as well. It cost me $33 plus shipping. It is a THRACE, CHERRONESOS AR HEMIDRACHM: Description: Date: 400-350 BC Rev: Lizard Size: 13 mm Weight: 2.40g Ref: GCV 1605

Just a thought. It would seem that all the references to lions on Greek coins and in mythology that there must have been lions in Greece at some time. As far as I know, there are none there today, so what happened to them?
