I have to ask Quartergeek, why would you go to all the trouble of amassing all the Petro Can series - it took me well over a year to do so - and then try taking them out of their cards?

Liquid nitrogen.

I had thrown a colored men's hockey quarter into acetone once and the color came off instantly... I'd stay away from that for sure in this instance.

I removed the plastic from a loonie by boiling it (as others have mentioned). Left it on for the 2006 cancer one for the colour.

lradnoj: I suffer from OCD when it comes to organizing things using a system. I am new to serious coin collecting and haven't decide on a system to house my coins yet. The book marks and petro cards don't fit very well in any system I have seen.

Coin_Chick: Thanks for the acetone tip.

SPP-Ottawa: Not sure Liquid N2 is very practical. Have you tried it ?

Yes. But does not work on the proof Olympic Loon bookmark, for some reason.

Some of them I just leave in the card and use the four pocket binder pages to hold them. http://colonialacres.com/products.p...3758&ref=477

I put my PetroCan cards in a big picture frame to hang on the wall.

The problem with letting an organizational system shoehorn you is that you cannot un-destroy the bookmarks. I would just put them away, and revisit the issue in 3 months, see if you feel the same way.

I cut out one of the 2005 bookmarks to investigate the problem but the plastic looks to be moulded to the coin with no way to pry it off. I was surprised at how strong the bond is. I tried freezing the coin in the freezer but could only chip off a few chips off the plastic. I'm soaking it in olive oil now but don't expect that it will help. I will keep trying different things for now. Since Liquid N2 is not easy to find, I will leave that as my last option.

lyradnoj: I would keep an eye on your coins mounted on the wall, if it is the same as my 2004 poppy bookmarks the plastic may start to turn amber. I'm not sure about the history of my poppy booksmarks but expect that they were displayed in a place where the light caused the plastic to deteriorate.

I kind of worried about that, but figured that using magic tape on the cellophane that each card is wrapped in ought to be okay - and it's not exposed to direct sunlight. But if it does start to discolour then I can try something else. For now though it's a colourful conversation piece.

Hey Quartergeek here's what I did (sorry not the best quality)
poppy is 2nd bottom on the right
pink ribbon is to the left of the habs quarter

Petros are in standard picture pages from Walmart or wherever, this tip also from this forum.

I tried soaking the 2005 poppy in olive oil for two days which had no effect and I tried using a utlity knife to pry off the plastic but it just made a mess of the plastic.
As a despartion move I decided to soak it in acetone. After one day the acetone attacked the plastic which had turned amber and I could scrap off some with my finger nails. The clear plastic on the obverse side was not affected.
After another day of soaking in acetone the plastic started to lift from the coin unfortunately about 10 percent of the painted poppy lifted with the plastic. I am adding it to my collection anyway.

Unless I can find some liquid nitrogen I'm leaving my other coins in the packaging.

Thanks to all for the tips on organizing. I think I will pick up some of the 4 section pages to store my petro canada coins in binders.

I know it is an old topic, but I was wondering the same thing myself. I used an exacto knife to pry of the plastic on each side. The hard plastic on the back comes off easy once you get a small piece of the edge off. That hard plastic isn't sealed to the back of the coin, only the edge. So it takes a nice hard pry with the knife to pop large pieces off. Careful with your hands!

Here is one that I pried the plastic off of:

I will read through all the posts again and try some of the things you all have done.

Obviously, someone has done a good job at figuring this one out...

Or, get one without the paint, yet certified...
