Every now and then I get a couple ounces of sterling silver for less than half of spot. Other times I have picked up rare numismatic items for 25% of retail.

I look at every_single 1921 Dollar on ebay. Every single one. There are currently 3897 offerings in that category. I find maybe three a month worth bidding on, and actually win one every other month.

So I am guessing it was you that killed my snipe bid on the 1921 Peace dollar yesterday SuperDave?
I thought I had that thing nailed down at around grey-sheet and it got slaughtered in last minutes. It was even listed in the "every thing else" section too.

Here's another prime example of what I'm talking about:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1929-D-NGC-...em58935c9082

1929-D SLQ graded by NGC, advertised as improperly cleaned with XF detail, yet somehow listed as $50 BIN. NGC guide suggests $36 for an original coin.

I rarely use buy it now. Seems like with all the free listing lately there is a ton of overpriced stuff listed. I've gotten some great deals on auctions that end in off/odd hours. I agree patients is the key. What type of coins are you looking at?

A lot of it depends on the item. Consider that if you are bidding on a coin that is the best looking in its group or very rare in its category it will almost always go for a premium over market value. Afterall thats probably what got your attention in the first place.

Not every coin on ebay will end up a good deal and you wont win everyone either. But you can get good or fair market deals on coins especially if theyre a lot of that type on there. The rarer the item you are bidding on the more likely it will go over market value, but sometimes you have to pay a little more for something that is unique or of better quality compared to its peer coins.

Also consider the buy it now prices are often factoring in ebay fees. When its said and done on that last listing the seller will only end up with about market value for that coin. But some people do over list coins trying to make some money as after all only 1 person has to say yes. Just pass on those items and look for others

basebal21: Yeah I know, I realized these things. I can understand the higher prices due to a nice looking coin, and I was actually just going to ask 'how much are seller fees for all this stuff', so I know why a lot of prices can be high... I guess ebay just takes a lot of time and skill cherry picking the heck out of it.

I had a lot better luck looking into online dealers - nice looking coins, great luster, fair prices (if not lower! than price guide values). What online dealers would you guys recommend? And what other online auctions are good, if anything is consistent?

I was browsing ebay again and came across a 1930 MS66 w/CAC Standing Liberty quarter, being sold by David Lawrence for $1350. Well for informational purposes I checked the cert on PCGS and saw that its estimated value is around $1300, but what shocked me was that it was sold earlier this year for only $690.

Donk the ebay fees can be quite high on some things. I think they take like 6-8 percent of the total of postage and sale, plus then paypal takes another 2 or 3 percent. You really do have to look around a bit on there to find the good stuff, sometimes the buy it now ones are the better bet if the bidding on that type item is high for that moment.

DavidLawrence is a good one, I use them a lot too. They have some coins like that that you will think are over priced but most are reasonably priced and you can knock a few dollars off usually if you give them a lower offer. Theres a couple coins there I have my eye on like that hoping they will relist it lower, but if they bought it high theyll hold it forever till they find someone to at least give them their money back,.

Ive also used provident metals before and been happy with my dealings with them as well.

It can be a bit irritating that so large a percent of listings are so overgraded and/or overpriced on ebay. It wastes buyers time to have to wade through coins that are 2+ grades overgraded and then 150%-300% of RETAIL to boot.

IMO, you rarely get a decent deal with BIN. It happens, but it is extraordinarily rare. Auctions are much more likely to render a good deal but as mentioned if it is a nice coin those can get ridiculous fast as well.

BE PATIENT! Set up automatic searches and also try other sites as well.

Good Luck!

I should probably clarify a bit. The Buy It Now prices often are high. If they have the best offer option as well thats the method that has netted me the most good deals for coins. Obviously it depends on the person but some people are happy to just move the coin and will take a decent amount off the buy it now price

Auctions and "Best Offer" bids are the best way to get decent prices on ebay, no doubt.

I've had some spotty success with a couple of other sites, for slabbed coins at least.

One is http://www.collectorscorner.com which is linked off the PCGS website. There are a fair number of dealers who list there so it has more coins than most sites. Plus it is like a pre-defined "Best Offer" as you can email the dealers an offer from the site ( you can buy now as well but I have never done that since I'm always trying to haggle a bit at least - offering to pay by check often helps ). Have bought maybe a dozen coins that I found at that site now, never a problem. A couple of the dealers don't like email offers much - from their snide/snotty responses - but most are okay folks. Surprisingly, to me, a couple dealers sent the coins out to me before they even got my check. I must "sound trustworthy" on the phone to them. LOL

Northern Nevada Coin http://www.brokencc.com also is decent in that their stated prices tend to be more reasonable than a lot of dealers/sites. Again, they are amenable to "discount by check" offers as well. For 4-figure coins, that 3% cc fee can be a big deal to them.

www.cheapslabs.com can also be useful.

Good Luck ALL!

Timing and patience seem to be key ingredients to getting a "good deal" on ebay.

I average one great deal per 25-30 auctions bid. It takes a lot of effort but the deals are there. Things slip through the cracks, at times. Bidding against a world market I find is unrewarding. I try to keep my searches to US only and then look for sellers who aren't shipping outside the US. New sellers are potential goldmines, as well.

Just yesterday, I watched an 1877 cent in G-VG sell for $143.50. It was mistankely listed under Mexican coins. Still kicking myself for not bidding.

I have gotten several great deals on ebay over the years, but be warned that it takes time and effort.

IMHO a good deal on ebay is getting what you have paid for at a price you are willing/happy to pay.
I haven't the patience to penny ante on bids , I normally bid the max of what I am prepared to pay for a coin and not even look at the listing.
If I get a notice in my email that I have "Won" a coin I always know I haven't overpaid.
Sometimes you get it for the opening bid which is great for me but a bit sad for the seller

even though thousands might be watching an auction, etc there are the occasional few things that slip by and people get good deals
