That did not take long to get blocked at work, I mean at location "B"; ACCESS DENIEDANACS Certification Search http://anacs.inetlogic.com/SEGS coins will not be able to identified with a numerical grade in the title, you can spout off all you want in the description, SEGS is not going anywhere.

I don't sell/buy on ebay at the moment, but this seems like a good thing for coins? Am I missing a downfall to this? If anything I was going to try my luck selling some nice looking copper cents as single coins and bulk sales, and I just have to avoiding giving it a grade (which I wasn't planning on doing anyways).

That isn't actually correct. You're no longer allowed to mention an unapproved grading company, even in the description of your listing. You can't include a picture of the slab, either. And they're enforcing the new rules pretty strongly.

I predict a proliferation of fake PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG slabs with cloned certification numbers

I didn't know ANACS had ever been taken away from approved TPG's. When I first read this I was thinking "two all I see is one added and that is ICG" I thought NGC,PCGS and ANACS was always approved

Hmmm. I have one concern regarding both the 4 certification services and the $2,500.00 limit on selling raw coins. Being a collector of ancient coins, I subscribe to the practice on not having my coins graded. I am ok with grading modern issues, but as for Ancient coins, I shun the practice. I am not alone in this belief. Most Ancient coin collectors also shun TPGs. Out of all 50+ Ancient Coins I own, I only have 2 of them graded. They are graded and certified by Sear. When you have an Ancient coin graded by Sear, your coin isn't encapsulated, it is sent back to you with a laminated certificate with a photo of your coin and a signature from David Sear with information about the coin and a grade. Obviously Sear isn't considered a TPG with standards by ebay. In the Ancient coin industry, Sear certification is highly respected as one if not the best. Unlike TPGs, Sear is more knowledgeable and focuses on Ancient coins only. I recently sold two coins that were also certified by David Sear. With the new rules in effect, both would be considered raw ungraded coins. The other problem I have is with the selling limit. If you are a collector of Roman Aureus, you may have one or more coins in your collection that sell for way more than $2500.00. If I was to sell an Aureus, ebay would only want me to have it certified by a TPG which is shunned by the Ancient Coin collecting community. TPG such as NGC have on more than one occasion mis attributed ancient coins. Personally, I prefer not to sell my ancients on ebay, but others rely on it. I wonder how this is going to affect Ancient Coin collectors out there.

On a side note, I am glad that ebay decided to include ANACS and ICG. Both of those companies have been around for a while and are well respected.

Spider that is an interesting point about the ancient coins. Personally I wouldnt be comfortable buying coins that pricey off ebay with no third opinion but thats just me. I doubt theyd do it, but 1 solution could be to separate ancient coins or something like coins 500+ years old into their own category with their own rules.

I recently sold a Gold Aureus of Septimius Severus for over $5,000.00. Eventhough it was graded by Sear, according to the new ebay rules, I wouldn't be allowed to sell it on their site. The rules make sense for modern issues, but I don't think they thought about ancient coins.

I expect this ebay change is mostly in relation to US coins. Does ANACS or PCGS even do grading of foreign coins?

I checked out ANACS S/N Look-up, I must say that it is very low-tech. They have had YEARS to come up with some sort of verification system (like PCGS and NGC) and this looks like a "hurry up" job. Modern numbers pulled up fine with minimal details, older slads with alpha characters? Forget it. A "contact ANACS for further details" (or something along those lines) message popped up. Hopefully they will put a lot of polish on their "product".
