Props on finding a 1973-S. Those are tougher to come across.

I throw all of my pre 1982 cents in a small jar. I sorted them by date just out of curiosity. I do not collect Lincoln cents and never even filled a cent album ever and here is what I found in 220 coins.
1959 P, D
1960 P, D
1961 Proof
1962 D
1963 D AU red
1964 P, D
1965 one business strike & one SMS stike
1966
1967
1968 D
1969 D, S
1970 P, D, S (S is BU)
1971 P, D, S
1972 P, D, S
1973 P, D, S (2 S mint)
1974 P, D, S
1975 P, D
1976 P, D
1977 P, D
1978 P, D
1979 P, D
1980 P, D
1981 P, D
1982 P, D (These were determined by weight)

I did not count how many of each date there were and several were severely damaged being picked up of the ground.

Now they are all going back into the jar and who knows what I'll ever do with them since they can't be legally melted for their copper and they have no numismatic value.

It's actually not too difficult to assemble a complete set of Jefferson nickels. Because this coin holds up well in circulation, most dates, even the early ones, can be found in pocket change. You might need some help from ebay with some dates in the 40s because those were made of silver (and therefore taken out of circulation and hoarded) but there are no key dates really and you can even pick up a complete set of proofs on ebay for not too much money.

If you might like errors and varieties this should be required reading.

You can get a Whitman folder for them pretty cheaply. Sometimes on ebay you can get it for under $10 with some coins included.
