Jessvc1, I find it easier to attribute Byzantine coins than some Roman, plus it helps to have the book.

I like those large Byzantine follis coins. I'm planning on purchasing a Anastasius I in the future, that has a similar reverse. Very nice coin with clear facial features.

The letters on reverse are the denomination of the coin for example:M=40 nummi(follis), K=20(half follis), I=10, E=5

Nice coin giano, it looks larger and heavier then mine because of the flan around the edges. What is the mm and grams of your coin?

I see...it's 32mm and 16.65g weight.as usually the coin looks better in hand than in these pics, even the portrait's style looks totally different....but it's another mint and we know that every mint has it's style....

Nice! I need to get some larger sized coins. Most of my larger Byzantine coins are around 28-30mm and 14 gms.

My largest Byzantine is 38mm (B above). My heaviest is a similar Nikomedia coin that weighs 23.4g. I'm sure the record coins are biger than mine. The really big period of the M reverse coins did not last that long so you need to seek out Justinians in the year 12-15 (or so) range to get the largest. Right facing Justinians were from earlier in the reign when the diameter was more like the rulers before him. Starting in year 15 the size fell off quickly so coins are no larger than the early ones even though they still had the facing portraits.

Sorry, Dawg => I usually don't do the ol' coin pose-down, but I just love to show-off my one-n-only Byzantine coin whenever I get a chance!! ... "my precious" ... thanks, jessvc1

Thanks Doug for the good info, 38mm is a huge coin and maybe I will have one someday. Stevex6 that's the best coin of this emperor I've seen and it's always good to see some good byzantine coins. There sure are some nice coins in this thread.
