I was actually planning on breaking them out regardless, as I just purchased the set for the penny. The others don't concern me at all. It's the reverse of the penny with that fuzziness that I'm curious about. I don't want to break it, unless someone can tell me what the deal is there first - as I bought it from ebay and I was going to see what the seller thinks. If the general consensus here is positive I of course will go with the community's opinion. |

Hmm...
That second last picture(w/penny) looks almost like they are striations. Don't know what they would be from unless someone tried to clean them or something...?

I'm going to photograph just the penny in a few! It actually appears to be in excellent condition with the exception of that pennecilin growing on the reverse lol.

Ok, this was a hard task to complete LOL. Trying to photograph a coin under the scratched 40 year old plastic, let alone a proof! The single picture of the obverse, honestly makes the coin look terrible, I can tell that under the plastic, it is in much better shape than it appears. I want to badly to crack it open, but if you guys think I should return it, I of course won't crack it open. Take a look at the reverse, what do you suspect that to be? What is your overall feeling and thoughts on this?      |

Hey Joe, "where ya goin with that gun in your hand?"  (sorry for the Jimi Hendrix reprise) anyhow, how do the coins match up with the photos on E-bay from the seller?  Was it possible to see the coins that well?  I ask because I have heard of horror stories of bait and switch on there.  As for the 1970-S I have a hard time seeing if it is from the plastic or the coin but you having it in hand tells all.  I was thinking maybe that Verdi-Care might take care of it but being a proof I dunno  . I have never used the stuff myself just have heard a lot of good things.  Hit up BadTHad see what he says. Odd that the fuzz is white though..  |

thanks PT! the coin matches up, but then again, when I was buying a SD on ebay, I was more fixated on the date... looking back at them now, the pictures are exact, but certainly not close enough to see what I have pointed out. I don't feel its a bait and switch at all, I am happy that I at least got the SD, but I just don't know if what I am seeing on the coin will flake right off with some air, or its something else... I've heard verdicare isn't meant for proofs. |

Well if you are Happy with the coins I would take it out, and give it a gentile very gentile wipe with some thing very very very (you get the idea) soft. Good luck Sir ! Gotcha on the Verdi_Care !

The cent has more issues than just what is "growing" on the reverse. It has some serious spots on the obverse that aren't going to get any better. One in front of and one below his chin and the worst in front of his chest about even with the date. Overall the set has issues that, for me, I would not live with. If the seller has a no questions asked return policy send the set back for a refund. Proof sets can be very difficult to photograph well if the person taking the photograph is not very experienced in taking pictures of proofs so you have to be very careful when buying proof sets online anywhere. If at all possible buy your proof sets when you can see them in hand. Ed ANA LM-3175 |

Looks like mold to me. It probably sat in a damp place for awhile. I am not sure if it will come right off.

Most of the coins show the normal toning process for mint products. This is mostly due to improper storage. People just don't think when it comes to storing these sets and they typically have WAY too much confidence in mint packaging. Storing these sets is no different from raw or slabbed coins.....MULTIPLE LAYERS OF PROTECTION MUST BE USED.
Hit the cent with some acetone. I don't think I've ever seen something like that, it looks like plastic to me.....which will dissolve in acetone and be removed. I rinse every single proof I get with acetone. Minor surface debris will eventually cause spots! I really hate albums for proof coins, you're just asking for trouble IMO. All of my keeper proofs are in airtite holders as just the first layer of protection. I then use bags, desiccant packs, sacrificial cents and tupperware....remember this:
