Quote: I suspect the customs people were trying to figure out whether the coin was stolen from Cyprus, Italy, China or somewhere else they have an agreement with. It's rather scary to consider how any coin from overseas could undergo such delays and scrutiny--although actual evidence of "theft" would be nigh impossible to obtain. If borders get really tight for ancient coins, will it severely end the market--or does trade just go underground?

The coin came from the Netherlands. What do you think stevex6? Of course I'm going to pay him. I find your question a little insulting, I've already sent him an e-mail.

I'm all for having a light heart group and I enjoy most of your jokes, but when it comes to implying that I'm not honest enough to pay for the coin I draw the line. I've been on this fourm almost from the beginning, there was a long time when it was just SAP and I keeping it going. Now it has grown to being a great fourm with great people and fantastic coins. Your coins have been among the best posted, your idea of the smackdown has been excellent and has let others show there beautiful coins. We have become a family here and there is no need insulting. I've said my peace now, so forget about it and lets move on to doing what we love collecting ancient coins.

Thanks Ed, didn't noticed I typed a Z instead of A. It's a very nice coin I so glad it wasn't lost after all.

On the subject of coins dissapearing in the mail system... On the 13th July a buyer from Hawai`i bought a Valentinian III AE that I had up for sale for £15. In the invoice I gave the options of having it sent by standard Royal Mail Airmail or Airsure (which is trackable), the buyer chose Airmail. On the 31st the buyer sent a message stating the coin was yet to arrive and asked for a tracking number. In my reply, firstly I confirmed the delivery address, then explained that as they had chosen for it to be sent by standard Airmail, there was no tracking number. Reasons for why it had not arrived may have been straight-out postal theft or delay by the US Customs. Anyhow, I refunded him in full, including the postal cost. Reading this thread however, if it is not stolen but held in Customs, it seems the coin could arrive, at anytime the US Customs agency decides to release it.

It took three months for mine to arrive, there is still a chance that your coin will show up at some point.

Crikey! It is good they are stringent, but to be honest, they ought to be more slick about the way they process and assess items coming in, items that have "Customs Declaration" attached to the package ought should not take three months to arrive. I have often read on ebay coin shops, in the US, how Italy is a country they would refuse to send to due to the items "dissapearing" in the post. It made me think alike, yet every buyer I have had from Italy has got their coins in a week or two, without any hassle.

I have never mailed a coin to Hawaii, but I know from traveling there they have some stringent agricultural restrictions, even people within the states. So...adding customs to agricultural inspection could explain the delay.
