I wish I lived in a place where I could find a bucket full of old roman coins and artifacts, but they never did make it to Alaska. Although I have been tempted to dispose of my slugs by scattering them on glaciers to confuse future archeologists.

Jobwise I work for a hospital coordinating travel and housing for rural patients. Recreationally, BBQ and curse tourists in the summer and dream wistfully of living elsewhere in the winter. I just can't get away from these mountains without getting homesick though. Even the Alps didn't float my boat.

hahaha ... well, at least you have the BBQ, right?

Plus, for some reason I always think of Alaskan girls as being playful and flirty (kinda like these chicks):

Nothing could be further from the reality of Alaskan women. But cheers none-the-less!

I have been asked by a Metal Detecting Club in Europe to help attribute the coins they find.

Pretty cool JW - Lots of fun to be had doing this I suspect.

I agree that with signed letters giving find locations you could add a few $s to the value. It would be a clever way of making 'lesser' coins stand out in the crowd on ebay.

I suspect 99% of their coins will fall into the $5-$10 area, as do most MD finds including the Gallienus in this thread. The cleanibg does detract from the value but not massively to most of the ancient buying crowd.

I guess your real job here will be to spot among the MDs coins the ones that stand out in quality or rarity and flag them up. All others I would just assign the usual $5-$10 as selling these low value coins can be a crap shoot, one day $2, the next day $20.

Wow - 'f.e.e.b.a.y' (stops to avoid auto-correction) auto-corrects to ebay!

Well, I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Not really, but I just received about 200 coins to identify. This will be fun for me, but time consuming. Just a cursory view of the images show some in deplorable condition that will require an awful lot of study to find an attribution. However, most, are in fair to good condition and should be relatively easy. I have already identified one coin that the MD club had mis-attributed. Here is the last communications I had with the club president:

All help and advice is gratefully received. I will send you images in future like the first batch and the ones I have just done. I am sorry about the quality of some of the pictures, they have been taken on my phone. Some images I send will have been taken at the digs and will be alot clearer. some will be taken by me on my phone and will not be as clear in many cases.

What would you suggest the best way to clean the coins would be? I wont tell you how some of the members suggest cleaning coins, it would horrify you.

As you can see, he has asked for help/information on cleaning these coins. As most of you already know, I no longer participate in the cleaning process. I was never very good at it anyway. If one or more of you would like to give me a paragraph or so to provide to the club members regarding cleaning, I would greatly appreciate it.

One other note. He has provided me with Google Earth maps with precise locations of each and every find. This makes things very interesting.

Wow Bing => the google earth-map location adds a super-cool provenance detail to the coins (nice) ...

... but it sounds like you're gonna be busy (I hope the pay is worth the time involved) ...

Good Luck

Pay?

This will be a labor of love for me. It should help to strengthen my attribution skill, don't ya think? Plus, if I see something I may want, well, I suppose I may be able to have first shot at it. Kinda like the English noblemen in Scotland, eh? You know: prima nocta

Feel free to send me (or post) ID problem coins that have detail. I assume a certain number of them are slugs? There is a difference between 'identifiable deplorable' and 'detail free' although when it comes to value, they tend to meet at zero.

Seriously?

Wow, hey Bing => do you want to work in my engineering office? ... apparently I don't need to pay you for your efforts, because you'll be cool with the fact that you'll be learning a whole lotta cool stuff about mining engineering ...

=> are ya in, or not?

Just jokes => I'm sure that you'll have a blast (you are amazingly quick at figuring-out those hard to figure ancient coins!!) ... good on ya!!

Hey Jerry, sounds good to me. I don't know what kind of mining you're into, but most of my family are coalminers in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. One of my cousins is a mining engineer in Pennsylvania. So, yeah, I'll be your apprentis.

I haven't been cleaning many coins lately, but I think using the Gringott's powders is about the fastest way that I know how to do it without brutalizing the coins. Using whichever one is most appropriate for the type of encrustation, along with some gentle scrubbing, might remove enough dirt to satisfy them without ripping off the patina. Maybe someone knows a better way, but that is the best I can think of since I am guessing they don't want to mess around with soaking them for months.
