The AU-58 1857 in my 7070 doesn't have the leaf detail this coin has, very nice indeed! Ed ANA LM-3175 |

The next time I go to the Post Office, this one will be there. I just don't know if they're closed on monday. I'll have to check their website for the holiday schedule.
This was a pretty big purchase for me ... and my 7070 has several coins of this caliber. There's no way that I'll ever be able to afford to complete the set and have all ofthe coins be of this caliber. When I started out, I decided that XF-AU was where I wanted it to be, and while I've been able to hold to that pretty well, there are a few coins that will be prohibitively expensive for someone of my pay grade. I have 7 more holes to fill, and they are all coins that will be north of 500 dollars per coin in AU or better.
I've made several fortunate purchases along the way ... so maybe my luck will hold out. Right now, my champagne taste and beer budget are locked in eternal conflict.
It's probably time to let some stuff go, but I can't find the time to list it. The literal translation ... I want to keep it all. ha ha.

Great coin Sutler, thanks for sharing. After looking the coin over, it does not seem to me that the obverse clash is from a FEC reverse. The 1857 series, as you may know, is popular for their multi-denominational clashes. The raised ridge under the eagle's breast is interesting.

I've looked for that die marker on numerous specimens and have yet to find another. Rick Snow thinks it's a normal FE cent clash. I'm still studying it.
I've located another 1857 that may have some kind of mule clashed reverse, but have yet to identify what it may be clashed with.

Sutler, awesome. How did Rick grade it? Glad you had it looked at, good move. I was wondering if perhaps the clash is from a rotated FEC reverse, and the raised area under the eagle is from the knot in the wreath.

Rick just looked at the pictures ... and hasn't had it "in hand". He didn't offer an opinion as to grade. It's clearly been dipped though. It's very white. I don't know how long it will take it to get over that, but I'm going to keep it. I just looked at another 1857 on ebay that has the same unidentified clash that I mentioned previously. It's not a fluke ... because there are 2 examples, but I'm still studying. I have flipped the image and inverted the colors , tweaked the brightness, and while there's something there ... I'm not sure what it is. Chance |

Chance, I think I may have found a possible answer. My theory is a "double clash" in two different positions with the reverse. Has this possibility been observed before, on any US coin? This picture shows how the eagle lines up with the strong clash on the reverse.  This picture shows how the knot ended up below the eagle's chest.  Edited by Drsandman2

On second thought ... that would have to be a counterclash, where a coin left that impression in the die, or it would be incuse like the rest of the clash marks .. right?
If it were simply a piece of debris ... it sure is a coincidence that it follows the eagle's breast.
