1879-1885 Trade dollars are rare proof-only issues, this one is definitely not genuine.

Definitely fake. This coin has Obverse #1 which was not used after 1876.

not much to add to this but Moe made an excellent point. This is where knowing the series can save you time and money. If the design is one that hadn't been used at the date of the coin you can guarantee its a fake. Trade dollars are one that really needs to be studied before buying and it can take years to learn, even then you may get it wrong at times because some of them use the correct designs with the correct dates so you have to do further investigating. Remember, if you aren't sure about something then always ask first, that is what we are here for

Hi.

Thanks for all the replies.

SteveCaruso if you want to pay the post I'll quite happily send it to you, it came as part of a joblot of world coins and I suspect the seller knew it was a fake as cunningly placed it in the pile of coins where you couldn't see much detail. Considering reporting to ebay but total price was small.

Can someone elaborate upon this issue further with comparison photos and related verbiage in an attempt to cut through the clutter?

Thanks,

Read the section regarding Trade dollars in the RedBook, the obverse and reverse differences are explained along with photos. It basically involves differences in the positioning of the arowheads above 420 and the tips of the LIBERTY ribbon.

Sad fake, bold date, non-existent liberty details. Liberty's neck is almost gone which should not be the first part to wear away.

Sorry all who looked at ebay - didn't know the rules on fakes etc, feel quite stupid now.
