I do like Chop Marks, as long as it is within reason, and doesn't take away from the overall eye appeal.

For example; this coin has way to many chop marks, for my taste.

I kinda like 'em too. I can't really explain why since damaged coins don't normally appeal to me, but I like a couple of well placed chop marks on a Trade dollar.

I'm not big on chop marks. What I don't understand is how some TPG's will ms grade some of these with chop marks. As mentioned by another my goal is a proof Trade dollar.

Ok yea within reason that Trade dollar has been ruined by too many chop marks but one or two of them well placed on a Trade dollar look so nice and so much history.

I absolutely LOVE them. I would love to be able to research the different marks and catalog what business used them or their meaning. Perhaps when I retire.

I want to start a Trade dollar set just with chop marks.

But I will only buy it when I see it in hand.

I think they're VERY cool and add tremendous character to a coin!

But, out of the 8 Trade dollars I have, none have any chop-marks...

I would like a fairly tastefully "chopped" Tradie!

Okay, I will be that guy. I do not care for them.

I want the one I get for my 7070 to be chop mark free.

I am not sure what my problem is with them, but I do appreciate the history.

I believe that any collection that includes a Trade dollar should have at least one with chop marks. Chop marks are actual physical proof that the dollars were used as they were intended to be, for trade with China. Unfortunately though there are people who are now stamping fake chop marks on fake Trade dollars.

I am really torn on this one. Years ago I was kind of upset to see PCGS decided to encapsulate a Trade dollar with chop marks when they sent any other type of damaged coin back to the submitter in a bodybag. I mean come on, how can you decide one type of PMD is alright when any other type of PMD isn't. That is really what these are, PMD as the chop marks was put on the coins outside of the mint so its a clear case of PMD. If they were going to allow any PMD at all in their slabs then I think they should have done as they do now and grade all of the coins with PMD. With that being said if the chop mark is pretty hidden and you really have to look for it to even notice it is there, then I don't really mind them but I do not like any type of PMD (my opinion) that draws the eye away from the detail of the coin. so I would have to look at 1000 chop marked Trade dollars before I would find one I would ever think about buying. I do have a couple Trade dollars in my collection and not one of them has chop marks on them and I probably never will own one with any. There was one posted on here awhile back that had one little chop mark on the Reverse that almost blended into the design and I actually had to look close to even see it, that one I wouldn't mind having but I am sure it is at least 1000 to 1 coin if not higher than that

My Trade dollar example has a single chop mark in the field, which does not detract from the design of the coin. And I love it. The eagle on the 20 cent piece and Trade dollar is my fav!
