Cleaned. Sorry. The obverse was definitely whizzed at some point, imho.

Whizzed? Why would you say that?

FWIW, here's another picture of the obverse with slightly different lighting and angle:

Yeah, definitely whizzed, it just has that "look". Lacks mint cartwheel luster, imho. The fact it was reflecting the color of your shirt is another hint that it's been whizzed. PL Barber halves are very, very rare. EDIT: Who was the seller?

Very nice! AU53, the amount of feather wear keeps it from AU55.

It's cleaned, it has been dipped, there is no evidence of harsh cleaning and it has obviously been whizzed. I love you guys, but sometimes you drive me crazy... Quote: Who was the seller? I don't recall, since it has been 3 or 4 months at this point. It wasn't anybody I recognized as a known scam artist, however (you know, the guys who are known for selling whizzed coins with altered photos to make the coins look nice). In fact, the seller's pictures (which I kept a copy of) weren't all that great in the first place, which is why I thought I might possibly have found a proof: But, yeah -- as I said up front, I really bought this for my type album and liked the amount of detail for the price.

I see no evidence of a prior harsh cleaning ... for sure not wizzed IMHO.
AU-something ... lovely coin.

I agree with AU-55 details. The coin looks overdipped with the milky appearance on the reverse possibly a result of improper rinsing after the dip. While whizzing can sometimes be subtle, the coin does not appear whizzed.

I did? If so, I apologize since that was not my intention.

Hmm I suppose rereading your post, you didn't. I'm quite confident it has been whizzed though.

Your coin looks great to me. I dont think its been harshly cleaned. That sai I am pretty sure most old silver coins have been cleaned at one tome or another. In one of my books on coins, the author says dealers at one time cleaned every silver coin that passed through there hands. And today still many dealers and collectors chose to clean their coins. And why not? There coin to do with as they see fit. And if a dealer says the coin is cleaned then you have all the info needed to make up your mind to buy or not to buy. Enjoy your great addtion to your collection. I have been working on a complete date and mint mark set of barber halfs for quite a long time. I would add this coin to my collection in a heartbeat. Looks Au-50 to AU-53

Quote: I'm quite confident it has been whizzed though. No offense, but are you sure we're talking about the same thing here? I think most people agree it was likely cleaned/dipped at some point, but whizzing involves a high speed rotary wire brush that typically leaves faint hairline scratches. I don't see any such evidence, so I'm wondering what you are seeing?

An expert coin doctor can usually whiz a coin leaving little to no hairlines. That coin was polished. No ands ifs or buts about it. JMHO.
