Such a coin would be worth only the value of the gold it contains. St Gaudens issues are commonly available in Mint State condition, and many (probably most) do not achieve added value in any circulated condition. So, as of right now, your coin would be worth about $1660 minus any weight loss caused by circulation. That will change in lockstep with the price of gold.

With that said, heavily-circulated St Gaudens coins are rather scarce, and might have additional value to an oddball collector.

Wow, really? I certainly wasn't expecting That much! Well, then that's pretty good news. I was thinking in the range of $35 - $50. This is very good news, thank you!

I am not sure that we are all talking about the same coin here Do you realize that a Saint-Gaudens $20 coin contains almost one ounce of gold? Even a very well-worn specimen would not lose more than 10-15% of its weight. If you are only thinking it is worth $35-50, then how much did you pay for it

Do you mind saying how much you paid for it?
And how did you come to buy it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

A picture would be SO nice about now.

For what it is worth, a dealer once told me years ago that while silver coins wear away, gold coins wear down.
Much less weight is lost.
Can anyone confirm this?

Wait, what?

If you consider $50 to be a good price relative to what you paid, your coin is either baldly counterfeit or you bought it from someone who doesn't know what "gold" is.

Well I made a common mistake in noobs I guess, I didn't read all the fine print, it's one of those mini reproductions. Here's the auction link where I got it. A pretty cool site too, not just for numismatics but for all sorts of things collectable and not. http://www.listia.com/auction/65961...dens-gold-bu So far, I've spent a lot of money on ebay (and virtual money, credits on listia) and got a bum steer.

Wow that didn't even look like a Saint Gaudens that is a horrible reproduction and it even says layered in the title, I bet its worth $10 at most. Sorry you took a beating, live and learn.

It's okay, it wasn't worth too many credits anyway. About $5 worth of credits.

5 bucks isn't that bad, everyone on here has probably made far more costly mistakes

Hey basebal21, I confess to making $$$ mistakes. More than $5 and usually under $20.

TheNinthWave, ask us first and do not be discouraged. You'll live to acquire another day.

if my first mistake was only a $5.00 one I would have been happy. Also notice I said my "first mistake" as I have made more than one when talking about coins. You just have to learn from them and move on. I have made one that really hurt financially and at that time I had to step back and realize I needed more knowledge than I had and forums like this is an excellent place to receive it. Mainly because you don't have to know every little thing about every series as long as there are some members on the forums that do know them and can give you advice on what to do before you purchase. Some times you have to take a chance but you have to know a little about how to detect counterfeits before you take a big chance.
