Due to this, I am summing everything up in shorter ... To sum it up... I saw this coin before you bought it. The seller just auctioned off a lot of 6 coins with one being very small. I found that interesting as I was looking at the same seller when I rarely go on ebay and was considering my first online purchase. And I can't help but reply... So it's my fault

Very nice detail on the vase! Is it possible that lump is some kind of die cud--or struck that way? Great coin Steve!

No problem Windchild ... sorry, apparently it was merely a misunderstanding (I thought that you were bad-mouthing the seller, but in the end you were merely stating that you'd seen this coin prior to me purchasing and posting my thread) Oh, but just for peace o' mind, I'm sure that this lil' trooper will be visiting David Sear's California Ranch ... Thanks for the coin-compliments, gang ... I always appreciate the banter

Very nice coin Steve... The obverse being struck with a corroded die (wich is quite often seen on this issue ).

I'm an absolute outsider in this forum with zero (negative even) knowledge of the coins ... However ... need to express that I view Steve's coin as a gorgeous example of coinage history and art. Lovely indeed. David

Thanks Dionysos => I always appreciate your coin-opinions ... nickelsearcher => thanks for the coin-kudos ... I'm glad that you decided to drop-by the ol' shady-side of the Coin World (ummm, are you thinking of branching-out and joining the ancient side of the biz?)

Merry Christmas, fellas ... The wife and I went out and had a great Portuguese Christmas Eve feast last night, but today I am enjoying a day of "nothing" merely laying in bed and snuggling with my wife (yup, two days off seems perfect at the moment) ... Hey, I talked with my guy and he gave the following explanation for the "blob" on that gorgeous Stater:
Quote: The obverse die was corroded. It is well known as, for this issue (KALLI-), the same [corroded] obverse die is often used. See these, all from the same obverse die, various states ... http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=170630http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=167332http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=135622http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=159203http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=135621http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=215450http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=90742http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=296707 So then I asked him => "Hey, I thought it was considered "bad" to find several examples of the same obverse die? (I thought it was better to have a unique obverse, rather than to find several with the same flaw ... in this case corrosion and/or die rust)" ... So then my guy responded with:
Quote: Die match can be good or bad. Good if it matches known genuine coins (and it doesn't show any casting signs) and bad if it matches known fakes (or another coin, also sharing the same "physical" attributes (flan shape, centering, wear,...). Some dies, in Greece especially, were extensively used over a long period of time. In such cases, the coins often show the "aging signs" of the dies, such as corrosion, die wear, broken dies,... As is the case for this stater. NOTE => I'd like to thank my guy for spending the time to help explain the coin's history/authentication ... he is absolutely top-drawer!! Eh-heh-heh => regardless, this puppy will be heading to Sear's ranch (I love having the authenication sheets, but even more, I love having peace of mind) ...

Merry Christmas Steve!
I saw an obol of this design when at ANE, my local Ancient coin store (V-Coins Dealer).
Both Sides were stuck with heavy die wear and corrosion on the dies. It made this one look like it was stuck from fresh dies.

Thanks Windchild ... I am very jealous that you can actually view coins at your "local" coin store ... I do not have the luxury up here in Northern Canada ... => for the record => it is currently hovering around -30 degrees with the wind child ...

I'm happy that I moved! Norther Canada is too cold.... Calgary is at -26 including windchill right now... While it is only -10 including windchill here.. I've been lucky with store locations... that carry ancients (V-Coins Dealers) Both have been within a 30 minute drive before and after I moved this summer..
