These would appear to be tricky ones and have fooled a few dealers. It was only when more die matches and impossible die combinations turn up that questions started to be asked. Martin

This has a heavy thick black patina, so this must be faked as well, I have found it on many of coin that I bought, could this be done with a lot of these patina coins? added after to increase the value of the coin..

Hmm...the legends look different, but I see more similarities on the portrait than I'd expect. The thicker patina on the left coin could be obscuring some things.

The dies are identical. Any apparent legend differences are due to lighting etc.

Oh no. Eng I am sorry Dealers on VCoins are very good about refunding for coins found to be fake after sale. Hope everything works itself out. maridvnvm, great job on spotting this. I just hate seeing this stuff out there and I am glad people out there like you can help spot this.

I feel bad about calling coins into doubt and only do so when I am quite convinced. Study have studied fakes for years and sometimes I can see a die and alarm bells go off. Martin

Wow, those are scary fakes. Side by side, Eng's coin portrait does match that fake. Sorry.

If this is the worst fake coin I get its ok, I usually buy when I know its a fake, only paid $35 so it will go in my fake Ancient coin pile, 1st one, I will contact the seller and let him know. I do collect fake U.S. Silver coins, its all good. .

Unlucky Eng - a learning experience for us all though, everybody at some point picks a fake up, at least you now know the truth, hopefully your seller will do something by way of recompense even if you want to keep the coin.

Thanks Martin, I feel better knowing that I have something fake. .. I new it was a matter of time before I would end up with one,(fake) nice to know you have our back.. . I don't buy off ebay, only vcoin's, which I thought I would be safe... I'm going to soak it for a while and try to get some of that patina off.

Bummer, John. I hate it when this happens. Martin, you shouldn't feel bad when you see something wrong. One of the reasons for posting some new purchases is for members to help ID fakes. Good nose!
