It's always wise to keep abreast of new coin varieties and then implant them in one's mamory ...

ExoGuy,
Mammy, how I love you, how I love you, Mammy.
Was this a Freudian slip?

If a buyer does happen to bite on that %250 BIN price, he's definitely a sucker ....

I was, of course, joking about the purchase. Someone just the other day paid over 600 dolars for a fake 1895-P on E-bay. We discussed this on another post.

Haha that is awesome. I have one of the second link coins, my parents got it for me long ago because of my fascination with coins and with the Civil War. One day, I hope to actually get a Confederate die half.

Hey Arcticsparky ... I knew you were joking, telling a falsie, whatever. Slowaltima ... These ebay items aren't coins as they were not government issue. They're copies or replicas. While you or I may never get a chance to own one of the genuine Confederate halves, there's an intriguing alternative that is very affordable. When the Confederates took over the New Orleans Mint, they did strike half dollars, dated 1861-O. The dies that they used have telling die breaks. If you peruse the 1861-O half dollars on ebay, you can spot some of them. Be careful to look for and study the four varieties before buying one though. At least one seller is offering one that appears to lack any of the die breaks.

We nailed that one before anybody got ripped off, even though it was after the fact. We have more lead time on this one, and it'll almost certainly not make it to the end of the auction.

ExoGuy, That's some good information thanks. I'll keep my eye out for those.
SsuperDdave, So you contacted E-bay in reference to that 1895 p morgan?

There are 14 varieties, six of which were struck by the Confederacy and only two of them have prominent die cracks I believe.

The ones I look for that have a fairly good premium are: 1) Die crack from the nose to the rim (best one); 2) die crack running between 8+6 in date; and, 3) speared olive (to eagle's lower right) on the reverse.
