I love the Seated coins from New Orleans. The survival estimates on them are pretty low. Here's what it's showing for your 1858-O dime

Tbone, thanks for posting the survival numbers! The New Orleans mint always seems to carry a premium at higher grades for most years. As for the guesses on grade so far, I have to throw in the towel. No one so far has been close to what ANACS gave it Some additional info, the obverse is very weakly struck or, more likely, a very late die state, which is why you see no detail in the crook of liberties arm and the drapery appears to be detached. That's a low spot on the surface, so those details couldn't have been the first to go. Also, there is great luster left, maybe it didn't show in the photos, but it shows up better on this one than the 1855 Half Dime I posted not too long ago.

I don't want to be "Debbie Downer" (wah, wah, waaaaaah), but I see VF-20 details, environmental damage.

LOL, from your responses I'll say they've graded it AU53, but I won't pay anywhere near AU money on this one.

Supdog you nailed it. But what am I missing here? The coin looks great in hand.
I don't see environmental damage though. Maybe someone can help explain what is going on with this coin. Again, the luster cartwheels and is quite nice. Toning looks good. No pitting. No fine scratches indicating a cleaning. Details are lacking which is why I suspect a LDS.

Well I'd have to assume from your reaction of nobody being close that ANACS gave it a MS grade.. Or possible an AU? Maybe... But in all honesty, I'm sorry but I'm not seeing a MS coin at all.. Not even an AU.
I hate to say it but, I'd have to say VF-30, maybe 25 even. I'm seeing what appears to be more than just a weak strike, it definitely appears to have a decent amount of wear. And it might yet be the photos but I agree with Moe in that it also appears to have some surface issues that resemble environmental damage, but that could very well be just the photos.
Again, I'm sorry, I feel really bad saying it but I'm just not seeing a AU/MS coin, I'm really not trying to be a jerk. Is it an old small white ANACS slab? I like those slabs alot too.. Usually they were pretty good with grades. I'd have to recomend keeping it in this slab if it is AU/MS because if crossed over it might not make the grade again.. Still a nice coin though!

Supdog it is in an AU53 old small white slab. It does look nice in hand, but I can see where you are coming from. I honestly can not see environmental damage, and if It had been cleaned it was a long long time ago. Luster does not appear to have been altered from a dipping though. You live you learn! Thanks for your insights! And I can't see this being MS either.

I didn't say there is environmental damage, and I believe that some luster is there.
The thing is - when I buy coin, I buy it because I like it's details. If it is missing the details, either from wear or due to strike quality, it is worth less to me.
Basically, this is the problem with the grading system. Grade is given based on the details it has lost (due to wear) and not on the details that it has.

The coin in the slab looks better than your original close-up pics. I think the low grades are due to the original pics myself.

Interesting I'm not sure I see what Anacs did but then again I don't own a grading company and I'm not a certified grader

This thread has been most helpful. I will probably look to upgrade to another New Orleans mint Half Dime in the future. Pickings are slim with the no mint, and they can get pricey so it will be a challenge, along with finding the right 1837. I took a closer look at the coin today, and found something I think is pretty cool. There is a wicked die clash of the horizontal lines on Liberties shield on the reverse coming out of the H in half. It's so detailed it could have been struck on the reverse! I'm not up to speed on die clashing and Half Dimes, but with how thin these coins are, it is probably common. Still, it adds a cool feature to the coin.

I agree, the slabbed photo makes the coin look better. That's why it's always tough to grade from photos, not being able to hold the coin and turn it in the light.
