Hello Cointosser. What do you mean "might be closer together as in CD"?

Now that I posted, it looks like your 6 and 2 are definetly closer together:)

1862 seems a very interesting year, lots of variations which is probably inevitable with a 50 million+ mintage that year but some go into the thousands of £

CD is Close Date I think, but yours seems that all except the 6 are in same place in relation of the teeth and 6 and 2 seem definetly closer together.

If you sell it I would love to know how much you got for it:)

Yeah, I think it is closer, I don't know if that means it's a small date version tho... The date does look the same as on this half penny:

Looking again as far as the font size goes, it does look like it is less tall so it could be the FMAN 41 variation with smaller halfpenny date but I am not an expert, if it is then that's £1600 in the catalog (Collector's Coins GB book)

Wow, well that would make it a very nice find...Do you have any advice for having it verified? The condition isn't amazing (sorry, don't know if the proper classifications) I'll see if I can post a pic of the whole coin.

OK I think I've verified it as having a small date... The following pic shows both versions, the small date on the left (I assume). On the left one the 6 and 2 are closer together, like mine...

For what it is I think it is good to very good, fine in parts of the hair but I have no idea of how much it is really worth. On auction sites and auction houses it always depends if there's at least 2 people who really want it, if I was to sell it I would do a reserve on it of maybe £50-100 and hope it would sell for more

1862-Penny---Small-Date?

Hi, Moonshinewilly, your coin is not the 1862 penny with half penny numerals. I have included a picture from Michael Gouby's reference showing the two coins side by side. As you will note, both sets of numerals are the same width...the difference is the "Height" of the numerals! The small date (1/2 penny numerals) has a noticeably small height on the "1" in the date, and also the "1" and "6" are fatter than the normal date. They are hard to tell apart, unless you have them side by side. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I thought you would like to know.

Interesting topic.

I have a 1862 penny small date, well thats what I believe, Never had it checked second opinion, grade or value.
The green patina is because I found this small date while metal detecting.
What do you fellow collectors think.

Not sure who your expert was, but that is'nt halfpenny numerals. Comparing your coin too the Gouby penny book picture your numerals Are the same as the normal penny numerals. The Gouby Book pictures illustrates perfectly where the numerals are smaller and fatter, whereas yours are thinner and taller
