I contacted Littleton and am awaiting their reply. To answer the question, there was not a picture of a specific coin. It was advertised as a PF-63 condition coin.

Actually - it is as advertised then IMO... they knew they weren't listing perfect coins - hence the nice price.

I guess I should note my thoughts about the coin itself: I love the design! It's a beautiful coin to add to my collection. Whether I end up keeping this one or getting a replacement, it will permanently fill a hole in the half dollar commemorative section of my US Type collection.

That's why I'm torn. PF-63 could be assigned to a coin with worse issues (surface hazes or scratches). That's why I'm debating just keeping the thing as is...

I would keep it. When it is in the album, you will not see the toning on the edge.

As you have mentioned, you do not want to luck into something worse. For example, no toning, but a nice rim ding or field hit.

Good point, jbuck.

I'm no expert on tarnish....er... "toning", but once it starts, does that mean it will have a tendency to "spread" over time? I really don't care too much about the edge, but moreso about the tan-brown hue that's starting on the reverse of the coin.

Is it toning I see on the obverse or haze? To me it looks like haze. Personally, I find toning OK but really avoid haze, for some reason it bothers me. I am referring to the planchet haze that develops on some of the commemoratives from that time period.

If it's just haze a quick dip will fix it.

On the obverse I think it's just a bad reflection of sunlight into my camera lens... There's really no discoloring on the obverse.

The brownish hue is creeping over the "ED STATES OF A" part of the reverse and can sorta be seen in picture #5.

It should be okay if you keep it in a safe environment (inside a clean building, stable temperature, low humidity).

I just received the same coin from Littleton as well and mine has the exact same issues Chances are if you request another one, it will be the same (since we both got the same coin). Although I'd prefer for it to not have the black on the rim, I still paid less than the silver value of it so I'm going to keep it.

I'd try returning them if your both not happy with them.. I also got one through the littleton deal not long ago and it's perfect... I'd be worth a try if you really don't like them. Or as mentioned in an album it would be less noticeable. And for the price you still can't go wrong

I got a reply from Littleton, including a lesson on toning.

Quote:
Thank you for contacting us regarding your recent order.

The "tarnish" you are referring to is called toning, which is a natural process that begins when a coin is made. Toning does not affect the grade or value of your coin.

Below is some information regarding toning, for your reference.

Every coin begins to tone as soon as it leaves the press, because all coins contain reactive metals. Over a period of time, coins chemically react with substances in their environment.

For silver coins, the result is a surface film of varying intensity that gives part or all of the coin a range of solid or multi-colored iridescent hues on the surface. We have found that coins with a higher silver content, such as the 90% silver coins and the 99.9% Silver American Eagles, do tend to tone quicker.

Many collectors prefer toning because it is one indicator that the coin is still in original Uncirculated condition. Toned coins have been described as "nature's works of art", and can command higher prices.

Another feature commonly found on Peace dollars and modern Uncirculated silver coins is white to yellow "staining". This natural occurrence is a result of the minting process.

Improper cleaning, more than anything else, has harmed valuable coins. High-quality Uncirculated and Proof coins should never be cleaned, as cleaning can cause permanent loss of original mint finish and color (and permanent loss of value). Experts can easily detect a cleaned coin. Most experienced collectors and dealers agree that circulated coins also should not be cleaned, except by experts for specific restorative or protective purposes.

Littleton Coin Company has a 45-Day Money Back Guarantee of Satisfaction which states "You must be completely satisfied with every purchase you make from Littleton. If not, simply return it within 45 days for a prompt exchange or refund, whichever you prefer." You may also request your refund amount be applied to a new order.

When making your return, please complete the back of your invoice with your preferences (exchange, refund, or credit on account) and include it with the merchandise.

Please note that we cannot and do not guarantee that coins will not be toned.

We hope this information is helpful. If we may be of further assistance, please contact us through email or by calling our friendly Customer Service Department toll-free at 1-800-645-3122, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM Eastern Time.

Have a nice day!

Even before I got the above reply I decided to just keep the coin. Like folks have said, I'd be risking a ding or scratch with a replacement anyway. I did really appreciate getting such a thorough response from Littleton. Their regular prices may be a bit steep, but their customer service appears to be stellar.
