Its not a terrible idea. I sent in two which will be the first 2 PCGS MS70s .

That would be nice but I dont expect it. But the 69s are going for a solid premium where you could get your money back between the price of the coin and grading as opposed to the huge loss if its not top pop. Theres always the chance they cancel these like they did the Army too unexpectedly creating a huge run on them.

Plus if you like them enough to send them in unless you have a specific grade in mind its obviously an attractive example to you instead of getting a baggy one like above

basebal good luck on the MS70's!

The mark on mine is about 3/16 of an inch long and pretty noticeable. I think a standard is meant to convey how poor the minting is of coins - or how exceptional a coin is. Lowering the standard because of the mints poor production isn't doing either this coin or past or future coins any favors. I don't see them upping a 50's Franklin half to MS70 to overcome the lack of MS70 coins that were available. If the coin is not MS69 quality it isn't.

I am going to send it back and look for a PCGS 69 instead - perhaps pay $2 more.

Is it expecting too much to think I shouldn't have bag marks on a MS69 coin?

Actually, yes. An MS-69 coin will not be "perfect." Marks should be expected, though they should be very few in number, small and/or not in the prime focal areas of the coin (i.e., major design elements).

Without an image of your coin, I can't comment on the mark's severity or other characteristics.

I'm not suggesting that you keep the coin if you are not happy with it, just commenting that marks will be present on MS-69 coins.

Well - I expect a MS69 to be a little closer to perfect than an obvious ding presents. A 3/16 bag mark to me might be expected on a lower grade up to say MS64 - but once you get into MS69 I don't expect obvious dings. I haven't figured out how to take pictures of coins - I need to do that before I send it back.

I did exchange emails with the seller and he is going to swap it out with a coin of the same grade and I requested he verify it doesn't have bag makrs on it.

Yes the coin is very nice other than the mark - I'll have to compare it to my raw coins and see if there is a reason it is graded MS69 compared to them. Perhaps I am overlooking the obvious and the images are that much crisper?

If you dont have an expensive camera natural light seems to work best from my experience.

Without seeing the coin you may have gotten a dud, hopefully the next one comes back better.

If yours dont have any bag marks on them I would probably send them in whenever your next modern order goes in, considering the chance of the 70 to pay for everything seems to be slim to none I wouldnt give them their own order personally unless you just really like them and want it done for the set

Has anyone seen a 2013 D 5-star general 50C in MS70 PCGS or NGC?
The 2013 S PR70 PCGS is selling for outrageous prices.

Someone paid $2K for one on ebay!!! that's crazy.

Its not longer about mintage #'s but about third party grading #'s!!

I havent seen an ms70 50c from either. I know 1 does exist for PCGS but likely wont see the market until the owner dies. I cant even imagine the price when it does

On a side note - it does look like these are going to be low mintage releases - based on the current numbers. If I had the cash - a MS70 and PF70 of the dollars might be good to set aside. The PF70 halves are ridiculous on ebay right now...all over the map.

The pf70 halfs are going to command a good premium. PCGS has 30 of them in the pop report, likely their numbers will end up around the same as the Army half who pcgs had 90. Hold off on them right now though. Theyll no doubt cost a few hundred when its said and done but the couple thousand that some of them are getting right now is way high unless military collectors are in on these heavily for the long run the price should come down significantly over the next year

Anyone think that they (the mint) will move production from Denver in the future due to quality control issues or continue to spread it around from mint to mint for the sake of nostalgia?

I dont think theyll stop making them there but I do wish they would stop making the commemorative half dollar there until they can get the bag mark issue solved

As much as I like these I dont see that price holding up. That would make only the 89 D Congress more expensive and theres only 5 of those. A few of the General ones have popped up, while its not easy to find its not in the single digit rarity anymore. Theres a couple that arent that much more prevalent that sell for a couple hundred dollars not a couple thousand.

As of now my plan is to stay away from it for a bit barring a great deal and hope a few more pop up and the price falls some not being the new hot item to seek out.
