The ones from the specimen sets will cost more. The last time I was in a coin shop (it has been a couple of years) the 10th anniv. of the Loon dollar coin was selling for about $15.00. The cheapest way to get that one though might be to find a 1997 "Oh Canada" set. You may pay about the same price but you will get all the other coins from that year as well.

Canada has two Mints - RCM Ottawa and RCM Winnipeg Branch. RCM Ottawa was the old Royal Mint Ottawa Branch and produces the collector coins and sets of Canada. RCM Winnipeg produces the circulation coins of Canada and some non-proof sets. Both Mints produced Specimen sets in 1997 and the only way to tell them apart was how the coins were arranged in the packaging. In 1998 and 2000, both Mints produced Brilliant Uncirculated sets with those coins from Winnipeg carrying a W mintmark on the obverse. The 2003 Brilliant Uncirculated set was produced in Winnipeg and coins carry the W mintmark.

You can add the Trumpeter Swan Dollar to the Specimen's List for 2007. And I believe the 10th anniversary flying loons, bronze, are going for 30-40. A silver version was also issued for 1997.

Wow, maybe it's to sell off my spares There is also the 2008 dated loon dollar (landing in water) and the 2010 dated Vancouver Winter Olmpic Games logo dollar, which are available now. The quality on them is horrible though. The 2008 The 2010

These other one dollar coins that don't have a loon as the reverse design, are they technically "loon" dollars by virtue of their similar shape and metallurgical properties?

Yes.
They'll be in circulation on
July 23th, 2008 for Inukshuk and November 4th 2009 for the Olympic Loonie who seems to try to start flying.

The Loon that is landing in the water is dated 2008. The Logo dollar is dated 2010.

I took this information directly from the RCM.

Is there any difference in the actually coins from the two 1997 PL sets? I've noticed the Winnipeg one sells @ about $12 and the Ottawa for $27, for me if I don't care where they came from might as well buy the $12 one right?

Do you mean uncirculated sets. Though they did have a Specimen finish they were sold in the uncirculated sets. My guess is that of the combined mintage of 174,692 sets, most were produced at the Winnipeg facility after production was transfered from Ottawa, therefore making the Ottawa sets more scarce. It made no difference to me as I cut mine from the plio to add to my book.
