Another batch arrived, this one from ebay. I'm new to ebay and took a look at various offerings a couple of weeks ago. This seller, Jackson & Jacobs Family Numismatics, had several uncleaned lots closing that night over a span of minutes and I intended to buy many of them. I had my plan ready, my max bids considered, and was ready to snap some up.

I entered a bid of the first lot and came to a page telling me that I had to link my PayPal account. Ruh roh. Guess I hadn't done that. Tried to scramble and get it done as lot after lot passed by. Determined to get at least one lot, I succeeded on the last one... by logging in to my mother's ebay account at the last second.

"Hey Mom, hope you don't mind but you bought me some dirty old coins ". And she delivered them last night... flying 2500 miles to bring them. OK, she was coming anyway for Mothers Day and my half century birthday, but still funny.

Wish I had been able to buy more from this seller-- looks like there are some interesting coins in this group, which was titled "Budget Lot... mostly lower grade". I see a Romulus and Remus in there, cool!

Nice. A couple I can see which will clean up really well! Top right you'll want to soak in distilled water for a week or two and then leave. Its fully Identifiable from where its at now. What do those letters say?

Ben, after a quick rinse I took a look at can't read any of the letters on that coin (#G5). I'll try and pick off some crusting after a few more days of soaking.

Dont pick at it! Its already falling apart. Try and read the letters which once inhabited the holes. Those few letters should be enough to tell which emperor it is (unless they sant TANT!)

Thanks for the advice. I'll take another look sometime soon and see if any letters are readable. You said that it is already identifiable... what is it?

Its a fallen horseman type, that I'm sure of. I'm hhaving trouble making out the letters from the picture though. Probably a Constantius II. Take a look and see if you cans ee any letters.

All of these coins have been soaking in DI for the last week and I've scrubbed them a few times with a nylon brush. I picked at a few of them, used a brass brush on some. The $3 Balkan group from DOC is the most fun and half of them may end up attributable. Not sure how far to go with cleaning; may have already gone too far on a few. The two Greek coins are still disappointing but I'm going to clean them slowly and carefully, maybe something recognizable will appear. The Byzantines are cleaning up OK but the designs are very worn (and/or poor strike) so they are not particularly exciting.

I have a tentative ID on two of the Balkan coins, labeled B4 and B9 in the first post of this thread. A Constantius II Fel Temps and a Gallienus. Gonna try to take some pictures in a while and post each of those on separate threads along with another partly cleaned coin with a reverse design I've not yet seen. For the latter, the edges of the coin are worn off and so no legends are present and I don't know where to start with ID-- I don't even know what to call the reverse design so short of browsing thousands of pictures I'm stumped.

My second dirties. Third batch, really. Bought these from http://altainumis.com/altai/uncleaned.html, which is CCF member jcmworld's website. Just got them yesterday. Gave them a few quick soaks in distilled water and took these pictures. Bought a batch of Greeks and a batch of Romans. Looks like there are some interesting and hopefully attributable coins in the Greek pile. Some of the Romans are well-centered and a several should be fully attributable after cleaning. The teensy tiny sizes don't excite me though.

Yes, I was happy to see those bottle caps and look forward to exposing some features on them.

The largest coin (24mm) looks pretty clean already. Maybe I can coax some features into better relief. My tentative attribution:

Sarek, Vulcan
Posthumous issue, Terran year 2368
Commemorative medallion
OBV: Sarek bare head, right
REV: Vulcan after Kal-if-fee victory, vanquished opponent at his feet
Federation mint.

;-)

I've been lax in cleaning and identifying all these dirties but I think I stumbled upon the ID for coin F2. Here's that picture again so you don't have to go back to the first page of this thread:

Looks like it's Trajan. Below is a similar coin found on Cerberus Ancient Coins

$100 dollar coin x 80% coin = $80 coin.

If it only worked like that. Still a very nice piece.
