In that dupondius Pertinax looks like he has a fake Santa Clause beard on.

Fvrvrs think I know the NFG but what does the number mean? Can you guys say why you think a coin is fake so that us newbies and pick up a few clues? I would not have bought it because of that "ring" impression on the reverse and I don't like the lettering, but they might be fine!

This last coin for example. The image is very crude and bears very little resemblance the what he looked like. The letters in the legend are not in the right style and the overall appearance just doesn't look right.

I try not to grade legitimate ancients beyond "good condition" and excellent condition. With the phonies I feel free to make up anything I want based on the quality of the product. If I had banged this specimen out myself I would be reasonably proud of the results (altho Whiz is right about the fake beard thing). This doesn't make the grade as far as having to think twice about authenticity. The denarius did (I had to think twice I mean). With all the charlatans out there setting up shop in the garage as grading services I decided to set up shop right here on the sofa. You can send me cash money and I will certify your fakes for you with a "Genuine" Certificate of Inauthenticity (written on toilet paper) with the official seal of NFG Grading Service ! The best way to learn about spotting fakes is simply experience I am afraid. Some of the more recent 'stuff' does require researching the sites dedicated to spreading the word about the scammers out there.

FR I hope that is some quality 2 ply for that Certificate!
As for the bronze the things that would make me shy away from it is the beard which as I said looks like a Santa Clause beard. The second would be the lettering. It looks like it has two different types of letter for the obverse and reverse. The obverse looks like the bubble letters I made as a kid and the reverse looks like they came straight out of a typewriter (the A especially)
Also for Pertinax anything under a substantially sum of money ($300) makes me question its legitimacy. His coins aren't exactly common by any means.

I use 'Scotts'. If you were older (around 50) you would remember their TV commercials "A thousand sheets ...... That's a lotta sheets !"

As soon as I saw this next coin the word 'style' came to mind. The style of this coin does NOT remind me of any image of Pertinax. This coin just looks wrong.
To pick a fake coin on grounds of style is not a skill just restricted to collectors of ancient coins. Face recognition is essential for survival to all humans. Children and parents can easily identify each other in a large crowd.
