Wow! Lets hope so. How does one go about IDing and authenticating such a thing? And if it does turn out to be that, how the hecks would I sell it for full effect? As much as I love the coin and its history, raising funds for Uni is a lot higher on my list and if I can get even £5 out of the venture, it would be good (thats a day's worth of good food right there!).

I think it's most likely Theodosius II, Vandal coins are few and far between. In any event the only way to know for sure is to send it out for certification. I hope it is what you think, that would be a rare find.

Ben, if you need to Id something, you can send up to 10 coins to the British Museum. They ask you send sufficient funds for return registered postage, and a donation is always welcome. I have some details somewhere if you are interested.

Pishpash - thats a darn good idea. I'm visiting the british museum soon, I was thinking of taking a couple of shabtis up for authentication. Perhaps I can also bug their numismatists!

With types that were widely imitated (like the cross reverse and Victory advancing left), there isn't really a way to tell whether a late imitative is a mint product from one of the settled Germanic tribes, and not a backyard job (or even a badly degraded imperial issue), without a king's name or perhaps a mintmark of a city under their control. When looking for Vandal coins, I stick to types unique to them, such as KART FELIX, or the palm tree reverse (there are at least a couple inexpensive ones on ebay as I type). Ben, I hope your coin is Vandalic, but I wouldn't put money on it. Still an interesting piece to have. |

RIC 422 isn't a cross coin?
Besides, this coin is quite different. Long legends (or garbled) and a very poorly redered 'wreath'. I'm taking it to the British Museum, perhaps they can compare it to some stuff in their huge vault.
I saw some really good stuff in the Ashmolean the other day, shouldve brought it along then.
