Yep, the 1811 Half Cents are notorious for being on porous planchets.
This one and another that I have were selected for being on quality planchets.
The US wasn't making their own planchets yet; they were all coming from England.
The ones destined for the 1811 coins were largely a bad batch.

BTW the lines you see on the obverse of my image are on the slab, not the coin.
Generally before I take pictures I polish the slabs but I think I got excited by this coin and wanted to get images right away.

I've got a LOT of coins that need to be re-imaged.
Easily said but a pain to do.

Wow, what a coin. These (including the even-rarer two-star break) are among the most striking varieties in the entire Half Cent series, and are definite "mortgage the house" coins.

I don't believe I have ever seen a crack pattern that would lead to this shape for a Cud. Very cool!

Don't forget that it was 1811 and:
-- the planchets were foreign-made (England) so quality control didn't exist.
-- dies were made with steel that was less durable.
-- dies were generally used until they totally failed (expensive to make in those days).

I paid $5500 3-5 years ago.
I'll have to look some more but at the moment I can't find any catalog value for it.

What a coin! The stars connected by the Cud in that way make it look like fireworks. Thanks for making me drool!

I love it!
