It's devoid of cartwheel luster in your images and that is what concerns me. I guess it could be PL...

Prooflike. Very rare in Mercs, and I doubt that one is, but it's possible.

They appear to be FBS, IMHO. I am not strong in identifying cleaning from images but the area left of the torch kind of look like hair line scratches in the images, which could indicate a cleaning. It could be from the plastic - like I said identifying subtle cleaning from images is not my strong suit.

Oh, by the way, nice Merc reverse! I would like to see the obverse if you have an image of it (and it could help answer the cleaning question).

After looking at it closly it does appear as if it may have been cleaned.

Is it still worth the FSB? I bought it for 10$

By the way if anybody has a opinion on the overall grade that would be great! I'm guessing it's somewhere between MS-63 and MS-65.

Here is a picture of the obverse, sorry bad picture.

Common date, cleaned, honestly? Imho, I wouldn't have bought it if I saw it in a junk bin. As far as grade, MS60DET Cleaned.

Here's what a nice, high-grade Merc looks like.

I was quite into Mercs for a while, beautiful coins, but cleaned ones are all over the place.

Even if it is cleaned, $10 is not much for a lesson in starting to identify cleaned coins. It is a nice coin so that is something. When my husband and I used to attend coin shows or local coin stores, I was notorious for falling in love without looking at the details. I got burned a couple of times but that was part of the learning process.

IMHO it is a nice coin to learn from (if it is cleaned) .

(If you want a lesson in how NOT to negotiate? I once saw something I really wanted at a show, grabbed my husband, nearly yelling "There it is! Can we get it?" No sooner than my husband's hand hit his forehead the dealer replied "No problem!")

I live in Sydney (oz). I have pulled wartime AU and MS FSB's from dealer's junk boxes, so I am forced to think that FSB's are not particularly scarce, perhaps 1 in 100.
I have even pulled a 1919 AU FSB from a dealer's $5 junk bin.

@ thecoincollector333: Yours is the real deal FSB.

Holy Cow, Fade, that's a glorious Merc.

FSB 1942's are very common. It was a good year for strikes. In the case of your coin, thecoincollector333, I believe that the vertical striations most noticeable on the left side of the reverse are what is making people think your coin has been brushed. Have a look at it under direct sunlight, which is merciless at exposing brushmarks.

I'm guessing you're not a poker player. If you are, quit.

Yeah, he gave us a deal, the "brother-in-law" deal. Retail plus 15% - I think hubby paid it just to get me to stop drooling.

You are correct, I do not play poker.

65FB in a rattler slab. I believe it would be at least a 67 today.
