You obviously have not dealt with anyone like we are describing, and that's good. If I sent you an eMail that asked if you have received your item and that I will leave you positive feedback as soon as you do the same for me, what would you do?

OK first a little about my real life, I am an Industrial- Organization Psychologist. I don't do counseling or deal with nutters. I deal with people and work processes to make organizations run better( and make more money). Now with an ebay purchase it is little different to a shop purchase. The feedback is simply a small added extra. Shops need to build a reputation....buyer dont! On ebay I believe when I am buying giving feedback is a courtesy I extend to a seller I don't give feedback to mainstream shops( even when buying online). On ebay feedback helps trust and sorts out good sellers from bad ones, but there is no requirement for any one to leave feedback.

NOw I expect any s;leer to stand behind their product, my online buying reputation is good ( the only disputes I have ever had were due to misrepresentation of goods and shill bidding) A seller who waits for me to leave feedback is actually telling me one or all of the following ( before the product is received):

  • They have possibly misrepresented the product

  • that here is someone who doesn't trust me and that they do not believe in their product

  • I am likely to have major problems with this seller if the item is lost or broken in transit

  • May be they are lazy...so Its unlikely I will get feedback from them even if I leave feedback

In answer to the question: I would tell you the opportunity for you to leave feedback had passed and I will not be leaving feedback.

Okay, if you are talking about sellers wanting you to leave feedback before you get the item, I can understand. I normally send my people a message after about a week of the tracking number saying it has been delivered. If someone sends me a message back saying that they would rather me leave feedback first, I don't have a problem with it. It is the people that don't even send a message back, which is the majority, that get on my nerves.

Now I have another one: this time a local coin dealer. At least this time I paid by Paypal instead of bank transfer. Cost of the purchase, with postage, US$570.00 (paid on the 4 November less than 10 minutes after the auction ended). There has been no acknowledgement of the purchase, no notification of the item having been sent. You may think I am impatient its only three days later....but if the item was posted on the 5th it would be expected to arrive today. If it hasn't been posted then its pretty slack service. Now if it were €20-€80 worth I wouldn't care but I expect with high value purchases a little more respect from the seller! I am confident the coin will arrive but there is no way I am leaving feedback!! I think this may put my original post in perspective.....remember in mainland Europe most sellers insist on Bank transfer for payment( it is heaps cheaper than paypal) Why not leave negative or neutral feedback? Well it often just ends up in a long irritating discussion with the seller, and leaves a sour taste. IMHO its better just to refuse to give any feedback.

Actually this is the second one like this: Another €518.00 ( not US$$s this time) purchase just turned up by courier last week)...the seller hadn't marked the item as having been sent hadn't listed the tracking number. The very morning of the day the item ended up arriving I had sent an ebay message asking had they received the payment....it was only then they recorded on ebay the tracking number ( they didn't reply to me at all) of the package..the tracking number was posted several hours after I had received the item.

But these are 2 different things. If the seller doesn't inform you about when he is shipping, that's wrong and I agree but leaving a feedback is something different.

I buy and sell and when selling, I've this in the description Feedback:

"Please leave me Feedback after you receive merchandise. I will leave you Feedback after I receive one from you. This is only fair because many people don't leave any feedback.
I appreciate your business, if you are satisfied with my service, please leave me a positive feedback and rate the details of the transaction (Detailed Seller Ratings) with a "Perfect 5 stars". When rating the shipping time please consider international security customs and handling. Your recognition will make me serve you better and confidently. My goal is to ensure you had a pleasant experience with me. Please email me before leaving any less than 5 stars ratings, negative feedback or open any dispute. I understand the concerns and frustrations you might have, and would appreciate the opportunity to resolve any problems to the best of my abilities.
Please Note: make sure the 'shipped to' address you enter during checkout is correct. Due to ebay seller protection policy, I cannot change the shipping address once payment is made.

Thank you and good luck Bidding."

the paypal purchase two days after receiving payment. its now the seventh so I might be a little impatient. The bank transfer the handling time was supposed to be 1 day. The US$570 coin should have been processed yesterday....with the local post here that means it will arrive tomorrow or Monday.....lets see. I know some of you think I am overreacting...but these seller are oddities the majority leave feedback as soon as the item has been dispatched...and a smaller number just contact me to say the item has been dispatched. Its the sellers who disappear into a black hole as soon as payment is made that irritate me greatly especially when we are talking about decent sums.

The seller whose product I have already received is not getting feedback from me....they had me worrying whether the bank statement went astray so I feel quite justified in making them wonder if the item has gone missing. And I will respond as they did to my communications.....ie:no reply.

I forgot to ask is there a difference with the ebay there? For the US one to get the top rated discounts or whatever they'll calling it now you have to put tracking into the system within a day for something like 95 percent of sales or more. I just don't get why a seller wouldn't put that in since it's usually their only means of protection during the process.

I recently sold an item, and the buyer didn't pay very quickly, so I sent them a couple of messages with no replies, and then opened an "unpaid" case because I wanted to relist it ASAP. Within 2 hours of the case closing, they paid, and it was with paypal and it was a Korean registered email address, so it cost me an extra 1% w/paypal. I still haven't left them feedback, because they haven't left me any. I'd like to give them positive or neutral, plus leave a comment about a foreign email address so others know. But I'm concerned I'd get slammed if I go first. So I'll just leave this one alone.

Kinda lame following my own post.....anyway....here's one for ya.

Yesterday received a used camera from an ebay seller. Am going to use it for coin photos. The box was left outside, and the second I picked it up I felt the camera shift. Then gave the box a little shake, and felt the camera racking back and forth in the box. No way, yes way, opened the box and there was the camera and a little piece of bubble wrap separate from the camera. Nice! No effort made to protect the camera. Hope it works, haven't tested it thoroughly yet. No feedback left for me as buyer yet. Assuming it works, what kind of feedback should I leave for seller. Positive, with note about poor packaging? Even the shipping label was a joke. Roughly torn off and poorly taped on the box. These people are really out there. As long as I don't ask myself "why?" I keep sane. Ed

didn't mean to hijack the thread....will listen from here on.

Ed Id send the seller a message about the packaging like one of those just wanted to let you know this happened. If it was a honest mistake and theyre polite about it Id leave positive feedback, if theyre a jerk thats a different story

Lazy packaging needs to be identified. I purchased a book once....there were hige p&H charges but I didn't mind..until the package arrived! The seller had just dumbed the book into an envelope that was too large for it and posted it off. I messaged the seller...no reply...I then left neutral feedback and pointed out the packaging was inadequate to the task. I recall the seller then posted in reply I hadn't had the decency to contact him first( this was in the days Sellers could comment of feedback) he then asked me to withdraw my feedback.....I recall being quite bemused that the guy could openly lie and then thought I would be open to removing my feed back......ON the medal purchase....Six days after buying the seller has actually noted the medal has been posted... and has left feedback "Terrific Transaction! Prompt Payment! Nice Communication! A+++" So credit where credit is due.....but it was a very long wait for any notification.

Thanks for the suggestions.

basebal21...I sent him a note, and he responded nicely, and asked if I wanted him to refund the shipping, so I told him half would be fair.

When I sell, I notify the buyer when the item ships. I don't leave feedback until tracking shows it arrived. I do this for only one reason. As a passive reminder to the buyer to also leave feedback. Doesn't always work. I usually go through my sales every other week and send a message to any buyer who hasn't left feedback.
