Day late and a dollar short ! I have been minding the more mundane things this week and didn't pay attention to things. Sorry to have missed out ..... next time for sure !

'Anoob'....... I was reading your entry. I too had once learned that the swastika had been 'borrowed' from India and inverted by you know who. When I was 20 years old I had the pleasure of visiting the 'Pergamon Museum' in that curious place once known to us as "East Berlin". To my surprise I noticed this symbol carved into the cornice of a miniature temple. How odd I thought that the rather 'intolerant' proprietors of the city would allow it to be displayed.
Fast forward around 15 years and I purchased a first edition copy of H.Schliemann's 'Ilios' which was his compilation of his excavations at Hisarlik (aka Troy). There they were ..... all over the place. Swastikas both left handed and right handed were a common decoration of the 3rd City. Schliemann had no idea that a 'real' Troy would be found in either level 6 or 7 and assumed the swastika's of level 3 were the symbol of ancient Troy. He imagined them to be birds in flight.

The anthropologists of the early 20th century insisted that based on the writing (linear B) found in both Crete and Mycenae that the 'Greeks' of the Trojan war were anything but. According to these 'experts' they were the "Aryans". A blonde haired blue eyed tribe of people who had migrated from ancient India and were everything that they felt the modern Greeks weren't (white) .... and so to were the Trojans.
Racist fantasies run amok ....

Even to this day I occasionally find modern books that make claims that make me cringe. I will always check the bibliography and what do I usually find ..... 19th Century German Anthropology.

By the way 'linear B' was eventually translated 60 years ago by a man who was trying to prove that it could not be Greek. It is Greek.

And H. Schliemann ? He insisted that his friends call him 'Henry' and he wrote all of his books in English (the German editions are translations). He was also very proud to travel the world using his United States passport (US citizen). Like many great people his work was used by others for purposes he would have had no patience for.
