That's a shame. It shows there's a lot more than a healthy bank account needed in keeping a club going.

SO sad to read through this thread. However, the writing is on the wall. If we cannot sustain local coin clubs, then the Internet is the alternative. I have made the decision for myself to contribute online in such a way as it preserves the friendly touch of a face to face meeting.

Good news, the coin club formally known as Strathroy is now moving back to Watford. The first meeting is the 3rd Sunday in January at the Lambton Mutual Insurance building on the corner of #79 and Confederation road. 2 o,clock is the meeting time but everyone likes to show up about 1:30. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks for the update cownick! Can I include this info in the Waterloo Coin Society newsletter? Strathroy and Watford are a long drive from K-W but our members will be happy to know the club is still going.
True, money in the bank or investments won't keep a club going if there are not enough members or a strong executive and volunteers to do the jobs needed to serve the membership.
I strongly disagree that the Internet is a viable alternative to coin club meetings. Unfortunately the reality is that we are becoming less and less of an interactive social society. While it does offer many benefits particular if you are not mobile, it will never replace the one on one interaction and valuable learning experience you get from attending meetings.

I have to strongly agree. While I highly recommend both venues, I have learned, seen and experienced much as a direct result from my involvement in coin clubs (whether local, regional or national) that I couldn't have online.

clubs meetings in person may be in decline but look at this forum, very active. I think collectors/clubs must go virtual, nothing against the traditional format

That's one of the biggest problems with the Internet. Too much information that is out of date and often unverifiable, Websites or domain names that no longer exist, etc. etc. While they all start with good intentions, some eventually stop updating shows and information. Here's one that I recently found http://www.thecoinlook.com/index.htm that no longer includes club shows. The club info cannot be verified solely through this site as there is little or no contact info to start with. Many of the websites that I've stumbled on have terrible misinformation(listing long deceased persons as contacts) as the person responsible for submitting the info never bothered to follow up or lost track of the website. Keeping these udated is a lot of extra work on the part of the webmaster who is providing a free service like Brian Smith http://www.canadiancoin.com/who added a great drop down menu on his home page. Plenty of others try to charge for listings and I've lost track of all the places you can find Numismatic show and club information. I know in my particular case, I have to make a list of where, what and to whom I send club or show information as they will not go out of their way to contacting me if I forget next year. Seems like an easy thing to remember but it's not. Wherever possible I try to keep a list or file of links so that I can quickly contact them to make changes, update ads and provide a record for the club executive of what the public is seeing regarding advertising. Quite a few clubs in Canada are unaware that Canadian Coin News has a Club Listings Page. If the current generation cannot quickly find out about the club by doing a simple search, it will be even tougher to get them to a meeting. Key here is to have an email contact and/or phone # wherever possible. No one nowadays is going to type or hand write a letter asking about the club. WCS tries to use a mix of old and new (Mall Promo Days, Community Channel advertising, Local City websites (K-W) and of course lots of promotion by visiting neighbouring clubs, attending area shows and through the Provincial and National collecting organizations. Still, while we may be fortunate to add a dozen or more new members each year this way, it's a real struggle at times to maintain our numbers, particularly around renewal time.
