Thank you so much to all, especially Philadelphian. For putting me on the right track.

It would also be nice to know if it's worth anything.

Not many of these have sold on ebay - good places other than there to look for what these have sold for in the past are Heritage ( http://www.ha.com ) and Coin Archives ( http://www.coinarchives.com ). Make sure to specify 'completed auctions' on ebay and Heritage.

I don't have my UK book handy at the moment, so can't look up mintages. If nobody else chimes in soon, I'll see if I can locate it.

I see a few in lots here: http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=...searchtype=1

And it looks like ebay UK has had a few (I only looked on US previously. Look for ones in green, that look like the same type and condition as yours): http://www.ebay.com/sch/Later-Medie...lete=1&rt=nc

But it also probably depends on the type or variety. We have a couple of experts here who may chime in, but there are also publications where you can try to find it yourself. There were a few publications on these; go here: http://www.britnumsoc.org/publicati...J/1945.shtml and look for C. E. Blunt and C. A. Whitton, The Coinages of Edward IV and of Henry VI (restored) Parts I II and III.

I'm going to move this to the Great Britain forum, so it will hopefully get some more attention there.

S1836 and a nice coin.
The obverse is pleasing and the reverse less so due to being slightly off centre.

Now for the bad bit.It is the probably the most common groat.
Spink values F £40 VF £135.
Now is the hard bit each coin is hand struck so giving a coin a grade is difficult.
You can have an as struck coin with parts of the legend flat.

The value of the coin will be somewhere between the 2 values...maybe £70 to £90

This is mine and cost me £60 a couple of years ago.

Its a very nice example and I suspect worth a bit more than that, even with the wear which is to be expected.

Hi,
I have decided to list it on ebay, as my thinking is with the money it raises my children can buy quite a few coins to start of their collection instead of having just the one.
I must admit I am quite surprised of its value, but looking forward to starting a new collection with my children and gaining some knowledge from yourselfs.

Hi Matt
Are you surprised at the high or low price?
Yours is surely a keeper.
Plus your mother found it.
Maybe the museum in Nantwich could display it with its history.

Hi Peter.
No surprised at the high value....We are new to this and still can't get our heads around some values of coins, ie we went out yesterday and bought some Roman coins for very very little money,.

My mother is having a clear out and wanted her grandchildren to sell it for sweets of all things, but in the end it got my kids, they are 7 and 10 by the way, interested in history, so now thanks to all the help on here they both know the history of Henry Vl after going out and doing there own research.

So now what ever money the coin raises, it is there's to buy other medieval coins and I am letting them do there own research, I think this is a great bit of education for them both and me included.

My mother has also stated she believes she has a couple more of these somewhere so that hunt is already on...

Is the property still in the family?
Get a reliable detectorist in .

For the money you won't get nicer examples.
The cheaper range of hammered would be Henry 111 to Edward 1 silver pennies. You can pick up cut halves cheaply plus there are many mints and classes.
Try Englands Striking History.
A laymans guide to hammered and easy reading.

Hi Peter

Ha ha no the house was sold over 50 years ago now, if only we knew then what we know now etc etc etc...

I must admit it is a cracking example got a nice solid thickness to it if you know what I mean? in fact it's the best one I have seen since doing a search online, which does make me think, but the kids want a few coins as sharing one coin at that age doesn't seem to go down to well.
