I use that adjective a lot lol, the Trapezuntine Empire. That's a very nice coin of John II, Sap.

Just changed the thread's title so as not to mislead anyone else about the Trebizond coins lol, changed it to the more appropriate 'Greetings' so I can introduce myself to the Coin Community.

Just read up on the empire...interesting. Must keep an eye out for David (the last roman emperor sort of maybe...didnt some other empires claim to be 'roman'?).

I don't believe that David minted any coins during his reign (at least for now none are known). I believed he reigned for something like three years or so before Trebizond fell to the Ottomans. As far as I know (and I believe Sear and Retowski go thus far), coins were minted up to the reign of the second last emperor, John IV.

On that note though, Emperor David was a complete and utter idiot - his wild schemes to conquer Jerusalem and his misuse of the alliances his brother built up to defend Trebizond gave Mehmed II the excuse to invade in 1461.

Interesting fact: The Empire of Trebizond ended up being the very last part of the ancient Roman Empire to fall, in 1461, since it had split from the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire as a result of the 4th Crusade.

Very true! Although I suppose it is also possible to argue that the Roman Empire lasted until the fall of the Despotate of Epirus in 1479. Although it had become heavily westernised by this point (the last few Despots were Italians), Epirus was founded as a Byzantine successor state by Michael Doukas after the Fourth Crusade. Though I prefer, like you mentioned, taking the line that Trebizond is the last remnant of the Roman Empire.
