From the looks of the first photo I think I'd have used RAID on it first. Then followed by a powerful disinfectant, then possibly a small fire. However, your efforts have already shown there was a coin under all that. Congradulations. I myself would be afraid of cathing somethig from that original looking thing.

thanks thq, the coin has been soaking in acetone for about 24 hours now (I've changed the solution 3 times already). No major difference (the black is still there but some of the surface is a bit shinier). I think I'll let it sit in the Acetone another day or so and then post more Pics prior to going onto the next step. Thanks for everyone's help so far.

After about 48 hours in Acetone (solution was changed several times) then a good rinse in distilled water this is the results with no noticeable improvements I guess the next step would be a coin/silver cleaning agent. Image: acetoneobv 001.jpg84.82 KB Image: acetonerev 001.jpg85.04 KB

Hagerty's makes a great silver polish that I believe is still available in an aerosol can. Spray on, wipe off with a microfiber cloth. No scrubbing needed.

The only thing that will help it is coin dip. But, it may come out as a cleaned AU. Little chance of it being an unc under that tone.

Go to Home Depot and get some high gloss silver spray paint. Put it in a new 2x2 and take a picture of it. Post it on ebay as an attic find .."Found it in a box in the attic, I don't know what it's worth but I think it's rare. I got bills to pay so as much as it pains me, I must part with it...opening bid $10.00."

Yea, leaning towards the spray paint option or there is always the belt sander If any thing this is turning into a good experimental coin.

I would try the e*Z*est Coin Cleaner, that should take the black off.

Thanks madspec, is that something that is readily available or only found in coin shops (don't have too many close to me)?

I enjoy the baking soda + aluminum foil technique on blackened silver.
Make a small bowl from aluminum foil. Put the coin on the bottom of the bowl. Boil a few cups of some water on the stove. Dump some baking soda in the water, mix. Pour the water and soda onto the coin and wait for about 10 mins.
See if the black the comes off with a little bit of rubbing with a cotton swab.

ok tell me if its a stupid question. Does cleaning a coin with that baking soda mixture or acetone greatly lower a coins value?
