Nice coin, one of my favourite issues.

Mine measures 24mm by 17.1mm and is similar on details to yours but your one it is much more obvious that the owl is in an incuse square... I guess that's because your flan is a bit bigger.

A few variations in the portrait to mine (the eye brows are different mine go behind the fringe of the hair and out the other side...) such details are helpful in aging the coin but I don't know enough about this to offer any insights as to how early or late yours is.

Anyway thumbs up, a great addition to any collection!

Thanks DavidUK, the closest match I can find is Dewing 1622. Not sure if it is the right one, and I have no idea on dating them. Just know I have lusted after one ever since I saw one for the first time.

A five fruit salute.

This is a must have coin. The coins to be genuine and a very, very nice example. If I were you I would be tickled pink.

Fortunately, you have photographed the edge. This is one of the easiest places to determine if it is a fake or not. There are, of course, many other checks and tests that need to be applied in the identification of a fake. I assume you have followed up on at least some of these, including a check for similar coins on a data base, as you have indicated.

This example looks perfectly good to me!

When examining the edge cracks, look for signs of metal distress inside the crack. This one displays those tell tale signs of a rough surface, INSIDE the crack, indicating metal distress, as if it has been torn apart, in the location of the crack.
Good quality cast silver coins do not show signs of this type of metal distress; the inside surfaces of the 'cracks' of cast coins tend to be much smoother than the example shown here.

This really is a fabulous coin, Pish. Were it mine, I'd probably wear it down to a good by fondling it endlessly

Actually, the Athenian tetradrachms actually do have the tactile effect of being a piece of money, of real value.
Silver has a relatively high specific gravity at 10.5. This, coupled to the fact that they are relatively thick, with high relief, helps to give them a sense of value.

Anyone who owns an Athenian tetradrachm quickly learns to appreciate this. It also helps to explain why they are so popular to fake.

Athens was blessed with silver mines reasonably close to the city. The feel of good money and a good silver supply helps explain why Athens rose to high prominence in the ancient Greek world.

What IS it about that owl that I find so compelling? Could be the big eyes.
If I had to have just one ancient coin it would be one like this.
