You will find tradernick. He has a coin shop near Orlando and can guide you in the right direction. I have had very positive experiences with Nick.

I will let others post which reference books will be best for you as I concentrate on foreign coins (Australia) and I would not be able to give you the most complete list.

Come on gang help this fella out.

Thanks yet again. I am sure other will chime in, lol, the thread isn't but a couple of hours old. Where abouts in S. Fl? Part of my family lives in Jupiter and Coral Gables. Orlando isn't but a 45min-1hr drive east of me. No big deal at all. On another car/motorcylce related site I post/moderate on, a guy posted two books to purchase. I will copy and paste those later and compare them to what others are suggesting.

Jayson your story is really a great start to a fantastic hobby. Your family has provided you with the foundation and it is up to you to build on that! It is a great feeling to hold something that your family before you felt was worth keeping and safe guarding to be passed down through the generations. Now you are the keeper, and regardless of the value, only you can carry this project on through the years. Good luck to you as you prepare YOUR part of the family history to pass on some day. Hope you learn to enjoy what so many of us have found.
I gave my grandfather an uncirculated set of Bicentennial coins, when they came out in 1975, hoping to get him interested in coin collecting. It didn't work but he did treasure the gift and was very proud of them and the Capital holder I put them in. Not much involved and they are not anything special but upon his death they came back to me. I look at them almost daily now and a million dollars couldn't buy them from me. He only held them for 10 years and now I have held them for another 20! I would have never thought these coins would be around in the family for 30 years and would become a family heirloom but here they are and here they stay!

If you want to put out the funds, Kraus is good and so is breens, for Id and rarity, also some good info on varieties, Price guides are just that guides, a place to start, but real world values often differ from those, both up and down ,, Best price guides are finished auctions, heritage, and even ebay.

Welcome Jayson. I think it is absolutely great that you are hanging on to your heritage. To me, there isn't a better coin collection than one that you received from someone and built upon it.

Thank you all very much.

Upon further looking, it would appear that I have some VERY small canadian coins as well. The paper envelope (as described above) says something to the effect of "new Zari(?) mark coin" There is probally close to 12 very small coins. Some gold in color, some barely legible. I really need to get that camera.

Welcome Jayson! What a great story. I hope this lights the fire for you and you keep the torch burning for future generations! By the way, a Daughter can do that for you as well! Mine has so far and I hope she keeps it going with her children in the future! Mike

I was just gonna say, "Wait a minute, girls collect coins too!" but Mike beat me to it! We may be few and far between, but we're out there! Welcome to the forum, BTW. That's a great bunch of stuff your grandparents left to you. I also wasn't aware of the extent of my grandfather's collection until after he passed away. My grandmother gave my dad and I his cent hoard- nothing terribly valuable in there but I still wanted to keep all of them just because they were Granddad's!

I am sorry to have not included the ladies into my story. I wouldn't mind a daughter at all. Have raised one already(not my own sadly), but my time will come eventually.

OK, I'll forgive ya! Just don't let it happen again... Seriously though, I think more dads need to encourage their daughters to start collecting. I know I wouldn't be a collector today without my Dad's determination to make me one! That first Morgan dollar in my Easter basket when I was a kid went a long way.

Darn, learn something every day! Guess my parents (grandparents) didn't have any Morgans as all I ever got for the holidays was coal and switches!

Relatives and Morgan dollars are responsible for a lot of collectors.
I remember as a kid of about six years old, running home with my older brother from an A&P food store where we had seen the teller had Morgan dollars in his till. We got three dollars from Mom & Dad (a lot of money then) and ran back to the store and exchanged the paper money for three Morgan silver dollars. Years and Years later my brother gave me a Morgan dollar and told me it was one of the ones we had collected. That sparked my adult interest in coin collecting. And that Morgan dollar remains my most sentimental coin.

Well came back from my grandparents and found an entire binder full of "proof sets". Not old proofs, but they are what they are. I will double check when I get home the time span. Found a HUGE stamp collection as well as those 22kt gold stamps. 4 binders full of gold stamps. Some other things as well.

Ok...the proof sets are from the years of 1968 to 1978. They are in a very nice binder complete with stamps etc.... Some other coins in hard casing as well
