Oh no....I am not that impulsive. I will almost certainly ask for advice before dropping some coin. No pun intended. :)

Hi Jayson. I have to say that I agree with Rick on this one. Overall, grab bag and lots by weight auctions are a waste of money. I have purchased a few in the past myself to get a taste for what was out there and have yet to see a blind lot be worth as much as I paid for it. A good lot auction will give you some details about what is included in the lot. This doesn't mean that every single coin will be described, but you will have a good idea what to expect before you receive them. It's amazing how attractive those lot auctions can look, though, isn't it?

They do take great pictures. In all honesty, if it wasn't for his feedback and money back policy; I wouldn't give it a second thought. I have been on ebay for more than 5 years now and have learned my lessons early. [:p]

I also read thru a number of pages of his feedback, my take on it was that alot of the positives were due solely to his RETURN policy, in other words, many lots returned !!

You might want to start on a type set of some country's (e.g., US) coinage- I found that a good way to start, and a good way to learn about the various coins a country has to offer. From there, you might come across something that particularly piques your interest or catches your eye, and you can branch out whenever you like.

Really, the Coin World is your oyster. You can go in any direction you like- Morgan varieties, Lincoln errors, Jefferson 5-cent set, etc. etc. The possibilities are nearly endless! That's why I decided to start with a type set for now (of US, Canada, and Mexico), and plan my future sub-collections as I see and learn more. I'm thinking of a Walking Liberty set next, since those are such a pretty design and relatively affordable. Good luck, and let us know what you decide!

Regards,
~neuron

Well, I guess what I could start out by completing the collection that I just received. However, my question is how do I go about finding out which coins are needed to complete the sets?

Do you have a favorite coin design? If so, that might be a good place to start. If you have any interest in a specific point in history, that's also a good starting point for a coin collection (this is especially good for European history which has their coinage by monarch). Just a thought.

Prosyletising for the Dark side now days SusanThis-A-Good-Start?

Seriously, there is no wrong place to start, but it can get expensive buying all kinds of coins and then finding that only one or two series really hit the mark for you!!

Ive been there and done that !!

Let us know if anything specific piques your interest, so we can help, makes us feel good you know !!This-A-Good-Start?

Hi doerr931

Welcome to the forum !!!

I think alot of us gave that a try at one time or another, and I would still buy Lots as long as there is enough info to tell me that there is at least one coin in there that I need !!preferably two or three !!

But no description grab bags !! No way !!

I found the last of the coin collection (maybe, still one room to search through). Once I know I have them all in one place, I will go through them and get them sorted out. From there, I will get the new Red Book coming out and figure out where to start. I have ALWAYS liked "big" coins. Just thought they were "cool" even as a kid. When I opened the box for the first time just last week and saw all these "big" coins, I was very excited! Don't care (much)about their face value, just the fact that they are "big"...Did I mention I like "big" coins?
