Sometimes I think it's hard to find good lower grade coins. I like them too. Are they popular?

Affordable decent ones are usually the hardest to find for hard to find coins. Usually you can at least find the really junky ones or super high end ones but no one likes to let go of that middle area. When they do finally hit the market theyll generally cost more than a book value says they should, but its not like you really have other choices for it

I hunted for a US Classic Head large cent for 10 years before I found an acceptable one for the price. This series is extremely tough to find nice specimens of.

I think the bigger question here is: do you buy fillers? I do not. I takes however long it takes me to find the suitable coin for a year set or anything presentable. There are tons of coins in my collection that I wouldn't want to showcase so I take my time finding the perfect coin in the grade I want it.

Good question, Libertad. I would never buy a filler. More important to me than filling a space is avoiding the severe disappointment of trying to sell a filler after I upgrade it or I get buyer's remorse once the ugliness sets in.

For me, it's varied. Sometimes I'll hold out and hunt for the dream deal for a long time and sometimes I'll cave and pay the going rate.

The bottom line is that it takes as long as we decide to let it take. We choose how long that'll be every time because we decide whether
we're going to pay the going rate vs. hold out for that dream deal as well as how long we'll hold out for.

I regret every time I've "settled" for a coin not up to the standards I've set.

Just not looking in or at the right places. For example have you tried to contact people in China? Might get you one made to order.
Not sure if you've tried coin shows but if there are any in your area, you might find exactly what your looking for. A good thing about a local coin show is the dealers are usually the same. Some get to coin shows all over the country and could look for exactly what you want. So if there is a coin show around you, go there and spend some time talking to dealers.
Not sure of your price range but there is a place called Miller's Mint, on line dealer. I just looked in the catalog from them and they have 3 listed. G-4, VG-8, VG-10. Great catalog. Request one if for nothing else a good reference.
And remember your looking for a coin with a mintage of 248,000 so not like they are all over the place.

I have always thought that it was much easier to find a $1000 coin, than a $100 coin. And I am not talking just grade. Especially the 1921's.

VG-F key dates are the only ones that most of us can afford, supply and demand kicks in and you end up seeing these coins go for a lot more (relatively) than they are worth. As a consequence, only the coins lacking eye appeal, are readily available.

Seems like there are all kinds of $500 coins available

When it comes to the US Twenty Cent Piece, I found the right one a few years ago and failed to buy it.

I had been casually looking for a 1916 s walker since 2007. I finally got this one last year. Often there was not a coin I liked available, then when there was one I did not have the funds.

How-Long?

I have two holes in my walker album 1921 and 1921 d but I'm only after XF or better for my set. I'm back to the no funds times again.

That seems to be what is happening to me. I found a really nice G-6 PCGS 1921 Walker and the gentleman only wanted $195.00 for it. He did have make an offer on it so I offered $160.00, he countered with $190.00 and after I thanked him for his time I went back to my search.

I was told by someone here on the forum that Heritage or Teletrade would be a good place to keep an eye out, I signed up for there Wantlist but nothing yet. It will show up one of these days.

muddler,
The only word to describe your 1916-S is "PLEASING!"

Maybe I am to picky.

No! I am still looking for my white whales, all three of them. Settling is not an option when you have something in mind.

I know what you mean with finding a nice well circulated Walker at the right price. I am trying to do that with a 1921-D now but haven't been having any luck. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend a little more. It is much better to spend a few extra bucks and get the coin you want instead of settling for one that isn't in quite the grade you want. Good luck with your search!

Yes I know, same thing when I was looking for my 1921-D. Ended up paying more than I wanted to but I got a very nice looking G-6, I will probably do the same thing with the 1921-P also. Nice ones seem to sell at the auction houses at a good price though, just don't come around to often.

Good Luck with your search too!
