I'd go with the 39 D, because in uncirculated condition, it's a tougher coin to find. I obtained 3 50d's in uncirculated condition really easily, one of them in MS 66, for $25. It was much tougher to find the 39 d in ms. In circulated, the 50 d is tougher to find. One of those curious things that I found out when I put my set together.

I do love the story of the 50d and is the lowest mintage but like stated above is very easy to find in high grades. 39d is the second lowest minted and 11 years older and tougher to find in high grade. Im leaning towards the 39d. I'm still wondering if there is any difference between the reverse of 38 and 40.

Out of both choices, I like the 39D. However, If you pickup the 50D, you will have some money left over for your next coin and you have the story of the coin being worth more in 1964 than 2014 :)

Are you going for full steps, partial steps, or do you not care about steps? 39D rev. of 38 would be the most difficult to find in full steps, so I would go with that one if you have one available in MS66. Reverse of 40 would be easier (cheaper) to find in full steps, if you are looking to cut back on the overall collection cost. Also, if you are willing to sacrifice steps you can put together an entire collection in 60+ for a fraction of the cost.
50D is insanely available in every grade, so I would hold out for a deal/bargain there.

The price difference between fs and non-fs is too pricey for this year so ill go without it. The reverse of the 38 only accounts for about 25% of the total mintage. Seeing as that I keep comparing everything to that one I think I know which one I really want to get. I already have a 1950 d in ms64 but its not going in the 7070.

If you like the 1939 D, buy it. I'm glad you're picking it

I'd say go for both as well! Put one in the album and the other in a 2x2

It is a 50D yes. It wasn't graded, I picked it up raw for around $12. Still one of my favorite buys.
