1972 is a special year because all other years the silver dollar have a commemorate subject, only 1972 has voyager pattern.

Gorgeous example, I would consider this one for ICCS.

It stands for International Coin certification Service, its a Canadian company that authenticates and grades your coins and than seals them in a plastic flip with the coins info such as grade, date, denomination and country. There's also a comment section that states any variety, cleaning etc.

Specimen strike 1937-1995 is a brilliant relief against a brilliant background struck.using specially prepared dies and blanks with higher pressures and slower moving presses.

Thanks it's been sitting in that case since my Grandmother got it in 1972.

Specimen or proof quality coins require very careful handling. You should really cover your mouth with a filter (so you will not get saliva spots on the coin). You should use gloves and plastic tongs. And you should be careful not to have any metal objects or liquid nearby where the coin might come in contact. Personally I have been burned too many times - anytime I see a specimen or proof coin being offered on ebay and it is photographed in bare condition I avoid bidding. There is just too much of a probability that the coin will have marks or dust or saliva spots (that don't show right away) because most sellers either don't know better or don't care.

Interesting, never would've thought of that. Luckily I haven't touched the coin and don't remember sneezing on it.

Maybe I should send it in to get graded and put in a slab?

I was like you. I bought 4 of the 1971 BC Silver Specimen dollars from the mint and they are packaged like yours. I thought they were proof coins. They sure look like it though

But I got educated by the board here. Never to old to learn something new.

Mine have been locked away for years and they have toned very beautifully.

In SP-66 that's a $40 coin, if it grades higher it would be worth sending in. Well to me anyway. BTW ICCS costs $12
