So if I offer him 485 I'd get it?
I'm just messing with you.

Easy 65 on technical merit but frankly the color puts me off just a little bit. I believe you're right to stand on your offer of $475 - provides you a bit of potential headroom for resale. For me, though, this isn't "the coin." It's not blast-white, nor pleasingly-toned.

No new news on the 65. however I noticed this coin on ebay from david Lawrence rare coins and was wondering what you guys thought.

I'm not impressed with the hair detail from what I can see and the same with the reverse leaf vein detail on the one leaf. as a p mint id expect a better strike. while the 64 is caced I think id still prefer the 65 over it, although I will admit the 64 does have it's appeal.

I'm not a fan of the 64 in the link you posted, Justin. The toning is... ugly, imo.

dave, I meant to but apparently forgot to ask a question of your thoughts. is your concern that it could be artificial or hiding something or that you don't personally like the toning and consider it non eye appealing?(something I totally respect if you do).

I have been thinking about it and I really wish I could see the 64 from david Lawrence w/ the green cac bean in hand. I'm thinking that the luster and toning might look a lot better in hand possibley. it has to have something going for it to get that bean and maybe amazing luster in hand and nice eye appeal and pretty clean devices and fields (well, to my eyes blown up as large as my comp lets me) led to it. regardless, I think id be able to tell within a few moment of it being in hand if its the coin for me or a definite pass.

I think the 65 mentioned in the first post is probably in the same "know in a few moments if it's the one you are looking for or not once in hand" category after thinking about it more. if I do buy it at some point I am going to make sure I get it through ebay email that the seller will accept a return within 14 days hassle free if I don't feel like the pictures were a good representation of the coins or it doesn't look as good in hand as in the pics to me.
a bit off topic but do any of you guys know how ebay bucks would work if I say bought an item and then decided to return it?
thanks guys!

Justin, I just don't find the color appealing. No reason to doubt authenticity or originality; it simply doesn't move me. Each to his own.

Only a few more days before the 2 weeks is up and no word still from him. I suppose it's possible he'll wait as long as he possibley can before accepting hoping to get more from someone else but I'm not too optimistic honestly.
I am going to stand my ground for now still. i'll probably extend the $475 offer another few weeks once it's up in a few days.
Another possibility is ebay throwing me a %10 ebay bucks special thing making it $450 if I get it for $500. I think even if he were to stick to $510 all the way id probably give it to him. my only concern here is that I got one of those specials last month on a day when I had planned to purchase a $200 item anyway so I took advantage of it. do you think it will be a while before they throw me another one since I just used one last month?

Bet the luster is somewhat muted in hand. Pass.

Don't play around with the OBO too much.
You only get to make 3 offers and then ebay blocks you.

I agree the color is meh. Maybe the coin looks nicer in hand. But I doubt it. Sure doesn't seem the rainbow it is advertised as.

Best Regards,

The 65 has a nicer look than that 64, but I'd pass on both for my tastes. I'd await a more compelling example.

This one is being offered for $475 and I prefer it to the one you are considering.

I'd pass on the first two posted. Yeah they are nice grades, but they don't have much eye appeal to me. I want my smaller coins like nickels and dimes to be bright or, if toned, have nice luster. Seems both of those are lacking.

Now the 1892 posted, I really like that one. Check out the die clashes!

Never did get a response from the seller. I took a step back and thought about it a lot and I've actually decided to walk away from it totally now. I'm a little torn on it as I still think its a coin that needs to be seen in hand to truly tell. however for some reason about 2 weeks ago I started having problems seeing/remembering why I had fallen so hard for the coin at the very beginning and to this day I still cant recapture or understand what it was about it at first that knocked me down.
something else that slightly worried me was the fact that while its priced pretty competitively it has been sitting up on ebay for at least 3 or 4 months getting re-listed again and again because I've had it on my watch list since then but no one has went for it yet.
another reason I walked is because of all your opinions. I am very strong headed and will generally do what I feel is best however I am also happy to receive the advice from people and take it into consideration when deciding what I feel I should do and what the next step in my collection should be. thank you

ultimately besides that small twinge of "I should of bought it and seen it in hand and sent it back if I didn't feel like it was the coin for me." thoughts I don't regret letting it go, its a very common grade in a quite common year since its the first year of issue with many examples to choose from anyway. their will be other 1892 p's.
