Quote: I am not a paid member of PCGS, is that the only way to get the pro images of my graded coins? What's to stop you from doing it yourself? For less than the price of that 1911-S, you can have an imaging setup capable of results as good as any "pro."

I do take the photos with a light diffuser, like a light tent. Most of the photos I took but they arent good enough. Aside from the key dates that I don't have would you consider these good collectable coins? I can't afford to get those MS65 Eagles with CAC stickers yet but I know its the top of the heap if collecting this stuff. And what other kinds do you like?
Any reason you prefer others to the Indians?

Jon: to the CCF! Looks like someone besides myself really likes the Bela Lyon Pratt quarter and half eagles. Unique an distinctly different, they nevertheless quite proudly take their place in classic U.S. coin design. No doubt, these pieces give you lots of satisfaction.

Sweet collection! On gold its best to stick with PCGS/NGC slabbed coins until you can study up on grading, Counterfeit Detection, and other problems that might prevent a coin from getting a problem free grade at a third party grading company. Quote: If I got them slabbed would it make them easier to sell? or increase the cost? I don't think it makes financial sense to get them slabbed. They look like nice coins but I don't think that the price increases a whole lot slabbed. Quote: I also wonder if I should be using this money on buffalo just to use as bullion. There is some pre-1933 gold that doesn't command that much of a premium over spot. Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles might be something to consider since they are common enough that it should be possible to get nice uncirculated coins and still keep the numismatic premium fairly low.

Any reason you prefer others to the Indian coins like mine? Coin collecting is a uniquely personal endeavor. One collects what one finds appealing, and it's as subjective as the foods you prefer. So, we can recommend until we're blue in the face and you'll still only buy what you like. I personally like Indian gold - the incuse design is very distinctive and the artwork is appealing. These - even in circulated condition - will always enjoy a certain popularity both because of the design and because they're gold, appealing both to collectors of the type and those who just wish to take a position in precious metals. So, they're a pretty good choice for you. If you wish to improve your imaging skills, check out our Photography forum. We've probably the most active Coin Photography specialty forum on the Internet, populated by enthusiastic and skilled practitioners, dedicated to spreading the skill. Post a thread listing your equipment, including lighting, and a couple of examples, and we'll be happy to help you maximize what you've got or recommend equipment improvements.

Great start! I love the gold incuse indians....and have been collecting them for years. Have you thought about putting a set together? I have a nearly complete indian half eagle set(minus the 2 big keys).....it was a joy to put together. I have them now in a DANSCO album. The quarter eagle set is much easier to complete, as even the big key, the 11-d; is very available. I would sell one of your 1912 half eagles and put it towards building a set of either quarters or halves(the indian half eagles are a real challenge with the 1909-O and 1929 looming out there, difficult to find without dipping into 5 figures on either coin.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I am glad so many enjoy these kinds of coins. I am sure I will branch out but for now this is my focus.
Johnny54321- The thought did cross my mind. Right now going for a set would drive me nuts, especially missing the key dates. I am obsessive so if I dive in, I will want to dive in hard. My main hobby has always been custom knives and I have a site dedicated to it. Jonbrandcollection.com -I added an "American Coin" section to it with my gold coin collection. But the point is, with my knife hobby it is hard to fully invest in coins. I spend thousands on knives and am not sure I am ready to spend that kind of money on coins. But this is the beginning and I am almost certain it will happen eventually.
I would absolutely love to see photos of your set, or just some of the coins. Do you go for certain grades or are you more focused on just filling the set?

That's a wonderful set. It really makes more sense then to collect randomly as I do. Today I purchased a 1926 quarter in MS63 with a CAC green sticker. I am quite excited.I'll post a thread with photos next week when I receive it.
Congrats on your set being almost complete.
