I would say this should go 65 as well because it looks alot better than my ms-63 I have in my dansco7070

Thanks a lot for your opinions! The pics are from my scanner. Unfortunately I am completely unable to do any adjustments to make the focus look any sharper :( I didn't see any blemishes on the coin - so I don't think the scan is hiding anything of importance. Having checked several pics of proof coins on http://www.collectorscorner.com I believe it has to be a business strike and I would tend to MS65, in comparison with coins of grades between MS64 and MS66. |

I'm trying to figure out what would keep it from a 66!! Is there any way to get shots from a camera? There is a pretty big price jump between the two grades most likely when you're up that high.....
Very nice Maudry. Was this a recent purchase?

Yes, it's a very recent purchase - I got it only yesterday. Ordered it from a trader in Germany together with several French coins including a quarter franc from Napoleon I in UNC.
The digital camera I have is completely useless for small objects like coins. So I am not able to provide better pics.

It is not a proof, It is a business strike. You probably dont want to hear this but there is slight wear on the cotton leaves(the high points) on the obverse and on the reverse. The coin might still pass as MS-60 but it has an unnatural appearance for an MS nickel and was probably cleaned at one point in it's life.
It might go MS-60 cleaned but I would call it an AU-58+

If you are that familiar with this series that you can see wear on this thing, I bow to your eyesight/knowledge. This is NOT being sarcastic either!! Thank you for the post. I would have put this thing way up there in MS level, and I would have sold it as such also thinking I was correct. I guess that's one reason to keep slabbed coins around. Nothing beats a coin in hand for comparison..... |

I can't see evidence of cleaning from the scan and it's very tough to determine the wear or condition of the planchet so I'm going to have to remain on the fence on this one in the absence of a photo. She's nice whatever grade she ends up.

In the absence of better photos, I stand on my initial opinion...this nickel is MS---maybe 65 or even higher. Now, in hand, the appearance of the coin could change my mind. We all know that photos are frequently very misleading as to a coin's true grade depending on lighting, etc. I, personally, cannot see any rub on this coin...but then differences in opinion are what makes the world go round.

Those are some really nice fields around the devices. I'm with Hunter on the photo quality and because of it it's hard to tell what the finish looks like. It may have been dipped but with the lighting it is hard to say if its the camera or coin.
The possible rub...without coin in hand it could very well be a weak strike
I'm not going too far out on this one so just say MS with light cleaning

are your pics taken with a digital camera or a scanner?
I ask this because a scanner will subdue luster and can sometimes make a coin look cleaned.

Thanks for all the comments again.
The pics are from a scanner which is not really suited for pics of better coins, but it is all I have.
It's true that it happens to subdue luster - this is especially the case for copper coins.
